10 Misconceptions About Greek Life

Do you really know what Greek life is about?

10 Misconceptions About Greek Life
Her Campus

Before I went to college, I believed the misconceptions about Greek life. I judged sororities and fraternities based on movies, social media, and what others were saying about them, but as I got to learn exactly what they are about I was quick to join one. And today I could not be any happier with my decision to join a sorority. The Greek community has worked hard to prove the many misconceptions about Greek life are, in fact, false.

1. All They Do is Party

What college student doesn't like to party? We participate in a great deal of community service and volunteer work. Each fraternity/sorority has philanthropies they raise money for each year. We love being able to give to our community and raise awareness and money for our philanthropies. We also attend socials with other groups of the Greek community.

2. They Sleep Around/Are Only Into Hookups

Who are you to judge if that is what someone is into? There is a good percentage of us that have a significant other, some within the greek community and some outside. So no, we do not all look for different people to take home every weekend.

3. Sorority Girls Are Dumb/Ditzy

We actually have some of the highest GPA's on campuses. We must meet GPA requirements and spend a certain amount of hours in the library each week to be able to stay in our sorority. The same goes for fraternities.

4. Fraternity Brothers Are A**holes/Players

They're actually some of the more kind, smart, generous men on campuses. A number of them have girlfriends they stay loyal to, and other's are enjoying the single life how they please.

5. They Pay For Their Friends

Yes, we pay dues, but they cover expenses within the sorority/fraternity. Clubs and organizations on campuses also require payments, but no one says they're buying their friends.

6. They're All Spoiled Rich Kids

Most outsiders believe that we have a sense of entitlement, which we don't. Most of us have jobs to be able to pay for what we want. There are members who pay for their dues out of their own pockets.

7. They're All Snotty and Stuck-up

We're actually some of the most caring, considerate people you will ever meet. We support our sisters and brothers and all members of the Greek community, and also support other organizations on campus.

8. They're Exclusive

Most greek organizations are very welcoming to everyone and we do not limit our friends to only our sisters/brothers. We are very approachable people and accept anyone. Members of Greek life are very diverse and come from different backgrounds.

9. They All Think and Act Alike

We aren't conditioned to all think or act the same, we still have our own mindsets and personalities. We have our own interests and most of us are involved in more than just greek life; such as, student government, clubs, tutoring, and jobs.

10. They Haze

Most Greek organizations have strict policies against hazing. So before you judge and say we are all simple minded idiots who party their way through college, you should know we are much more than what is portrayed to believe. We have requirements we must meet and rules we must follow in order to represent our sorority/fraternity properly. The last thing we want is to give Greek life a bad representation.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
