What to Know Before Going Greek at Doane
Doane Univeristy

The Greek system at Doane is great. There are 10 groups total, five fraternities and five sororities. Each Greek chapter has their own set of values and each stands for something different from the other. You might find friends that are in one group and you really want to rush them because of your friends, but that sole reason is not a good motive to join a Greek group. There are many reasons to factor into joining a group, which is why you should check out ALL the groups.

At Doane, the rush season is not until Spring semester, that way you get to know all the groups but your first chance to meet them is in the Fall at their open houses. If you are thinking about rushing or not sure, you should go to each of these open houses. You may think you are already sure on what group you want to rush, but going to the open houses and first rush parties may change your mind completely.

Here are a few reasons why you should check them all out.

First of all, each chapter has their own philanthropy. This means that they stand for something that they believe will help out their community and raise awareness over certain issues. Some issues may include mental health, domestic violence, cancer, or anything else that matters. Another reason is that each group has a different personality. Some groups are outgoing where others are more introverted. Some groups also have their own mascot which represents some form of their group and who they are and what they stand for.

Each chapter also has similarities though too. Each group shares common values like scholarship, service and leadership, but they also have different values from one another, too, which sets them apart from each other. They also hope to create an environment that welcomes others into seeing what their group is all about.

Of course, there is no obligation to rush. The Greek life is not for everyone and you may find that out once you go to open houses. However, just because your friends do not think joining a Greek organization sounds like fun, that should not make you hold yourself back if it is something you really want to do.

It is important to check out all the groups because even though you might have friends in one does not mean that it is the best fit for you. The group you may think you are going to rush could turn into a group you didn't even think of, if you just learn facts about the others. Knowing what the Greek organizations stand for are important to know for your benefit of finding the best fit. For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
