On Sunday, the world saw the 59th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony on CBS. Hosted by James Corden the Grammys were filled with fun energy, but like every award show this year it was filled with politicized performances and commentary. From #NODAPL to Laverne Cox (I stand with Gavin Grimm) to Katy Perry’s first Grammy performance the night was filled with persistence and resistance.
The night had been hyped up by many as an Adele vs. Beyoncé event, as both artists were up for many of the same awards (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, etc.). Adele opened the Grammys with a stellar performance of “Hello”, and later in the night, Beyoncé performed a medley of some of her latest hits. While Adele took home the big prizes (Record and Album of the Year) there was a sense of mutual respect, admiration, and promotion amongst the artists. Adele finished the night by paying respects to Beyoncé and her hard work with Lemonade.
