Why does society pressure us to do well in school? It seems that society has based success by the amount of education that we receive. In the end, it won’t even matter because we’ll all have the same diploma, a piece of paper that states we COMPLETED school. A form of completion does not show how hard a person worked because a person who actually put in the work could very well have the same grades as a person who cheated the system. So who’s to say that that is fair? By the time we are in our professions, we’re going to forget the times that we failed a chemistry exam and remember the times how we pulled it together and ended up passing the class. Post college, we’ll use the skills we have learned, not the grade point average we earned.
Universally, our GPA, amongst other things such as test scores are determining factors that get us into schools and programs. Who really knows if schools have a certain quota they’re supposed to meet, GPA shouldn’t be one of the only elements to take into consideration in the admission process. Our grades don’t reflect the person that we are and what we're going through. For example, we could know the material in the class and still receive a horrible grade because we're horrible test takers. On the other hand, we could have gotten an A on a test because there was a circulation of the answers going around before the test was administered. Our GPA does not say that. Our GPA does not give admissions the story behind the grades that we received. The only thing that our GPA is, is a number, a number that pretty much determines our future, but why? Our grades are not going to reflect what kind of nurses, doctors, or lawyers we're going to become, our characters are. The kind of people we are will power us through school and determine how we will succeed.
In retrospect, we all have unique lives. Busy balancing school, work, and play is not an easy act to follow. It is stressful and no matter how hard we work for our grades, all we have to do is pass because we’re all working towards the same diploma anyway. We’re all going to become what we want to be. We’re going to achieve all the goals we want to achieve. Sure, a failing grade will tank a GPA, but failures don’t measure success either. That's why we learn from our mistakes, work around our failures, and devise other ways to succeed. A GPA has nothing to do with life skills we have or the people we are. It is merely just a number that the society uses to rank students. It is not the end of the world to fail. So, stop worrying about your GPA. It's something that is easily manipulated. On the other hand, you’ll always be your own you. that's why it's time to realize that we can't let our GPA define who we are, what we're going to be, and what we're going to become.
