Well, here I am again droning on to all of you again about how wonderfully fantastic musicals are. Now in this article, I'm not going to speak specifically about a single musical. No, this article is going to (hopefully) convince, or at least consider, you fellow readers to go want to see at least one musical in your lifetime. Before I go on about how amazing more than most of these shows are, let me take you to a place real quick.
Imagine yourself with a lady, and you might have absolutely no idea what to do for your date night. Well, fret no more, for I may have a solution for you! First, you take your gal out to a fancy schmancy restaurant, but make sure this restaurant isn't an incredibly far distance from a theater. No, I'm not talking about a movie theater where you might see one, maybe even two couples, getting it on in the back of the theater, trying to be silent about what they're doing but actually just attracting even more attention to themselves. I am talking about a theater where you will most likely see men and women dressed for the night. No, not in costumes, (most of the time) but in business-casual style. Without even realizing it, this theater will take you to a whole other world in no time. You're going to see men and women on the stage in front of you performing for only your entertainment. While this may sound boring and dull, these performers are relatively experienced in the arts of acting, singing, dancing and maybe even other hidden talents you'll get to see during the performance. All you have to do is sit back, and watch while the possible plot of this show unfolds. Granted, these shows are definitely not the cheapest, but you will receive pure quality of talent, without a doubt.
Now that I've planned out your next date night, let me briefly explain the importance of some of these shows. I'll start with the show that has everybody in the theatre world talking: Hamilton. To sum up the plot, this is a musical told through the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of this nation's founding fathers. Mostly, he's one of the forgotten founding fathers, and is America's first secretary and treasurer, along with being George Washington's right-hand man. The twist with this one, is it's America told by today's minorities. That's right, there are only a few roles for Caucasian actors/actresses. Another musical that tells a moment of history is Newsies, the true story of how boys who sold newspapers went on strike due to the rise in the cost of newspapers. This occurred in 1899, so the 'papes were the only way people could get their daily news. Keep in mind that most, if not all, of these boys selling the papers were orphans, so this was the only way they could afford food to get through their days. So with some musicals, you're being given a history lesson, but told by performers who sing and dance the message, instead of some instructor you can barely understand lecturing you in a classroom.
My next point is the songs. I mean, this should be a given, but I assure you that you will have at least one tune stuck in your head by the time the show is over. After the show, you may even want to be the next Jack Kelly or Lin-Manuel Miranda. Gentlemen, if you're like me, you'll want to be with a woman who can either sing, dance or maybe even both. Well, these women are usually found in these shows, and you may even find yourself stuck in a daydream with one of the actresses. Ladies, I'm afraid to break this to you, but more than most of the gentlemen you see out on that stage are swinging for the other team. I'm not saying to give up all hope entirely, but don't be too surprised when you do find out that one actor you imagined yourself with is actually on the other side of the spectrum.
Hopefully, I have at least made you consider going to see a show, whether it be in a week, or even a year. I promise once you see one, you'll be addicted. There are going to be shows you will have absolutely no interest in, but that does not mean to completely disregard all other performances. Be like Alexander Hamilton and Jack Kelly: don't throw away your shot, and seize the day.
