Ever feel like you’ve met the absolute perfect person, at the absolute wrong time in your life?
It’s a known fact that girls tend to mature faster than boys, and for our love life’s sake it’s not the best of deals. Oftentimes our first loves turn into the loves that we will compare every other relationship to for quite some time. That boy who broke your heart could turn into the new standard that every new guy has to top. No shame to this fact, either; it’s relationships like these that teach us what we want and what we need out of a significant other.
In my life, I can’t thank that boy enough and I encourage all of you to take those heartbreaking break-ups and find the lessons you can take from them. Because let's face it, no one is perfect and each and every day will provide new challenges to the heart. To better put into words, here’s an open letter to the lucky girl that gets the man from my past relationship.
To his future someone,
He is kind, respectful, funny, caring, and goofy. Our relationship posed challenges that we weren’t able to overcome in our teenage lives, but I hope that age and experience brings wisdom and perseverance to do what we once could not. He used to be the boy with the backwards baseball cap and worn out Sperrys, a car full of empty Ice Mountain water bottles, and a captivating yet dimmed smile. I hope he bought a new pair of shoes to take you out in, but I hope he kept that same grin on his face that seems to make all fights and frustrations fade as fast and they arose.
In our time together, communication was never his thing, but don’t worry, because he expresses his feelings in so many other ways. He’ll show you what silence can accomplish, and I promise you it’s much more effective than words. I hope his carefree, gone-with-the-wind, not-so-typical attitude on life rubs off on your spirit. The game player, mind-twisting, heart-throbbing boy I once knew has probably changed into the responsible young man that you’ve dreamed of -- the type of man that you and all your friends described as Prince Charming. I can assure you that his past relationship with me was not even close to a failure, but a building block to the day he found you.
Sincerely,
The girl who got the boy
Life is a lot easier without the burdens of “what went wrong?” and “why me?” on your back. Relationships come to an end because we are meant to build each other up. Just think you got to play a part in someone else’s fairy tale -- you helped shape that boy into the man she will love one day. Just like some random girl out there had her heart broken to shape the man that will one day be yours. Because, after all, “I got the boy and she got the man.”
