The massively popular Game of Thrones series is known for its brutal nature in which anyone can die at any time, even more so than the books it is based on. Game of Thrones is now further ahead in its story than the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, so it makes sense that some characters have died in the show while still being alive in George R.R. Martin’s books. However, there are characters that have been killed off on the show before their stories from the books finished. Here are characters that have died in the show but are still alive in the books. Lots of spoilers for both series below.
1. Catelyn Stark
Show: When Catelyn's eldest son, Robb, is arranged to marry a Frey woman, he winds up marrying someone else. Catelyn is murdered at the Red Wedding when the Freys chose to get revenge on the Starks for breaking the marriage alliance.
Books: Catelyn dies at the Red Wedding, but her story does not end there. She is brought back to life as a mysterious figure known as Lady Stoneheart. She lacks the ability to speak because her wounds were not fully healed when she was resurrected. She looks rather different than when she was alive and she is also a lot more vengeful.
2. Robb Stark’s Wife
Show: Robb angers the house of Frey when, instead of marrying a Frey woman, he marries a woman named Talisa Maegyr from the Free City of Volantis. Talisa is horribly killed on the same night as her husband when the unborn baby in her belly is stabbed repeatedly during the Red Wedding.
Books: Robb angers the Freys by marrying Jeyne Westerling, a Westerosi girl. She is the daughter of Gawen Westerling, lord of the Crag. Unlike her show version, she did not join her husband in attending the Red Wedding, instead staying at Riverrun to avoid angering the Freys further with her attendance. She is sent back to the Crag after her husband’s death and not allowed to marry for the next couple of years to avoid rumors of any children with a new husband having actually been sired by the late King in the North.
3. Myrcella Baratheon
Show: The Dorne plotline is significantly different in the show than in the books. This version has Ellaria Sand kill Myrcella as revenge for the Lannisters’ part in the death of her lover, Oberyn Martell. Ellaria kisses Myrcella with poison on her lips. Myrcella dies on the boat back to King's Landing from Dorne in her biological father's arms and is laid to rest in the Great Sept of Baelor.
Books: While the TV versions of the Sand Snakes and Ellaria show them hurting a girl for her family’s crimes, the book versions of the Dornish women have very different plans for the Lannister girl. They actually want Myrcella to rule the Seven Kingdoms, as their culture has the eldest child inherit the throne, no matter the gender. A knight that disagrees with this plan tries to intercept the Sand Snakes and slashes his sword at Myrcella. Her face is disfigured and she is missing an ear, but she is otherwise fine.
4. Dany's Khalasar
Show: In earlier seasons, the majority of Dany's followers were the Dothraki that saw her survive a fire and hatch three dragon eggs. Her khalasar dwindled with each season until all of her Dothraki followers were gone. While she now has new Dothraki followers, her original handmaidens and bloodriders haven't been seen for quite some time. When sending her bloodriders to scout ahead in different directions, Rakharo's decapitated head is sent back on his horse, Aggo never returns, and Kovarro leads the khalasar to Qarth. Despite surviving, Kovarro is never seen again after season 2. As for the handmaidens, Irri is strangled during the theft of the dragons in Qarth and Jhiqui is only in season 1.
Books: Her bloodriders survive their scouting missions in the Red Waste. When Dany disappears on Drogon in Mereen, it is Aggo and Rakharo that search for her, rather than Daario and Jorah. The third bloodrider, actually named Jhogo instead of Kovarro, is being held hostage by the Yunkish, but is alive. Irri and Jhiqui, along with the rest of the khalasar are part of search parties to locate Dany.
