Do you remember in high school when you broke up with a boy or something bad happened to you and your friends were there instantly to make you feel better? Do you remember feeling so incredibly loved and cared for that nothing else should ever matter more than those relationships? To me, that’s one of the best feelings you can ever have in a lifetime. There’s nothing that can replace real friends who love and support you no matter what. I think sometimes we take it for granted, especially just in day-to-day life. We notice and appreciate it the most when something bad happens and our friends are there to help keep us standing.
I remember junior year of high school when I broke up with my first boyfriend. That night, my friend Bernadette messaged me on Facebook. When I didn’t respond, she asked why, and I told her what had happened and that I didn’t want to talk about it. The next morning at school, my friends all came to my locker with a cookie cake and some cards covered with inside jokes. I started crying right there in the hallway because I had never felt so loved by anyone other than my parents. Nobody had ever gone out of their way and thought of me like they had, and I’m still so blessed to have them as my friends to this day.
When I think about my best friends, it amazes me that I’ve found people so funny, enthusiastic, and kindhearted. What amazes me even more is that they appreciate not just the good parts of me, but the bad ones too. You know you’ve found a kindred spirit when you feel perfectly comfortable saying absolutely anything -- and I say a lot of weird stuff. My friends are my soul, even if I forget that sometimes. I think that embracing other people is one of the beauties of life. I have all these wonderful people around me, and I get to learn about them, laugh with them, and help them when they need me. I’ve written before how beautiful life can be if you take advantage of what you’ve been given, and people are one of the best things to have. Like no culture on Earth is exactly the same as another, no person is exactly the same as their neighbor. Every person has their own identity, complete with pet peeves, favorite foods, weaknesses, and dreams. There’s so much that we don’t know about the people closest to us, and I think it’s so interesting to think about. Nobody completely knows someone else. We’re all different and unique, and we all have wonderful qualities. That’s the biggest reason I think people -- more specifically, friends -- are the most important thing any of us have in our lifetime.
Our best friends are the people closest to us, who know us better than anyone else. After you read this, please tell your best friends how much you appreciate them. We never know what can happen, and sharing love is always a good thing.
