Life consists of many different avenues and many different people. Not everyone will travel down the same avenues, and that’s perfectly alright. While trying new things, whether or not you have a true aptitude for the activities in question, is always beneficial, you can’t expect yourself to be good at everything. Nor is it rational to expect yourself to be good at something to which your natural talent is not inclined.
There are some who are talented in mathematics and science. These are the ones who, in times past, have figured out how the world we live in truly operates, and how to utilize the things around us to the best advantage. These are the ones who continue to search for the answers we still don’t have, who find more and more solutions as time strolls along, who develop and revise technology to make daily life easier and who never give up on even the most daunting and seemingly impossible problems.
We need them.
There are those whose talent resides in the aesthetic, who somehow know what things will be most attractive to the average eye. These are the ones who create trends in clothing, jewelry, painting and much more. The clothing or jewelry they design can be a confidence booster to the wearer, and the paintings can turn a house into a home. They leave a mark on our culture that survives to tell future generations about societies long gone.
We need them, too.
There are those with a talent for language and rhetoric, who have skill with words and the way things sound. They are the writers, the musicians, the ones who inspire by letting the world see a little piece of themselves. They are excellent communicators, and because of them, we can realize we’re not alone. They bring people together in a united expression of what we all go through. They shape language and sound masterfully to display thought and feeling in a manner that can be widely understood and cherished.
We also need them.
The point is, there’s an excellent reason why everyone is born with different skillsets. Each skillset is necessary to tackle the things society at large faces every day. If we had only scientists, where would be the artistic creations and the books and songs that inspire us and let us know we’re not alone? If we had only artists, where would be the vast collection of knowledge we have gleaned over the years and the communication necessary to share with others what we learn and what we suffer and what we love? If we had only wordsmiths, we would likewise lack the aesthetic aspect of creativity that comforts us and the scientific knowledge that elucidates the universe bit by bit.
It takes many types to make up the world, and you can’t be all of them. Be the one you really are. Nurture whatever talent you have in you, and cut yourself some slack for the things you can’t do that others can.
You don’t have to be good at everything.
