Going for Gold: How To Survive Your Freshman Year In College Like An Olympian
E! Online

As I have been watching the Rio Olympics this year, all the athletes, but especially the U.S. team, have been attacking every event! They all have an intense training schedule, a knowledge of their particular sport, and a dedication that encompasses their whole being. So, in the vein of the U.S. Olympic Team winning gold this year in Rio, here are five ways you can 'go for the gold' your freshman year of college:

1. Go to every single class.

Whether or not you are an early bird or a night owl, go to all your classes. These classes 'condition' your body and mind to get on a different schedule when you are away from home and help you perform to the best of your abilities.

2. Get to know your professors.

Your professors are your coaches. They push you to your breaking points and believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. They are also wonderful friends. Many of my professors have not only helped my in classes, they have also supported me in my extracurricular endeavors. Getting to know your professors on a personal level can really make a difference.

3. Develop a Strong Work Ethic

College is a lot tougher than high school; you need to develop strong work ethic to win big. In my experience, the grade doesn't get better unless you work at it; tackle your "opponents" with strength and courage. Olympic champs don't get to the top of the podium without putting in the blood, sweat and tears. Go for the top; don't worry, your professors and parents will thank and reward you for it!

4. Focus on your passions.

Just like Olympians have a sport they love. you can find your passion as well! When deciding on a major, ask yourself these simple questions: "Will this help me achieve my goals?" "Can I accomplish everything that this major entails?" And most importantly: "Is this what I love doing?" I promise you, if you ask yourself these questions, you will have a clear picture of what you want to do with your life after you graduate.

5. Be yourself.

No Olympian is the same; each one of them is different. They each have different talents and abilities. The same goes for those of us in college. We shouldn't be carbon copies of everyone else; we should be unique and ourselves. When people go to college, they can find themselves. Like Olympic rookies, you as a freshman will have wide eyes, and a lot of nerves; don't be afraid, the juniors and seniors, or 'veterans' don't bite! Be yourself, take a deep breath, smile, and put your best foot forward!

With these tips, you will never go wrong! Good luck!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
