Go Through a Phase. Shave Your Head! Do It!

Why does it take us going through something really traumatic to shave our head? Stereotypes will say, it's always a break up that makes a woman want to shave her head. Women will listen to some really sad music and shave their heads and then regret it the next day, is what most will say. Why is it like this?

When people dye their hair red no one says, "Why did you dye it red?" When others let their hair grow out, no one says. "Why did you let your hair grow?" What does shaving your head symbolize?

I'll tell you what it symbolizes, it symbolizes that THIS PERSON IS FED UP! That's right, the person who shaved their head out of the blue is fed up with everything and everyone. Some will do this at the peak of their rage. They will be crying. looking at themselves in the mirror, take the scissors and start CHOPPING!

Personally, I found patches of hair missing in my head one day after I finished washing it. Later, I realized that I shared a similar stress disorder called Telogen Effluvium. This just means emotional stress causes my hair to stop growing and then it sheds. Once the stress is gone my hair will grow back. If the stress is still there, I remain bald. This is not permanent but it is something to think about. Once I learned this, I was fed up. Nothing was working correctly with me. I had more health issues than I could count, my love life was in turmoil, I was deep into my depression and nothing seemed to be getting better. I WAS OVER IT! I went on to do the big chop and honestly, I couldn't be happier.

Of course, the day after shaving my head, I screamed. Everyone thinks, "Oh my... why did I do this? Why didn't anyone stop me!?" After that initial feeling goes away, I thought to myself, "How can I finesse this?" Ladies and gentlemen, shaving your head does not have to be a bad thing! I found out so many cool things that you can do after shaving your head that you may not have thought about while having a head full of hair.

1) THERE ARE SO MANY EARRINGS THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO NOTICE YOU WEARING NOW! The amount of hoop and stud earrings are endless. And the fact that you went through a phase and shaved your head means that you can rock your personality with your earrings! Make a statement!

2) Your face is an official canvas! You can try different types of makeup without your hair getting in the way. You can finally see what you look like bald and enjoy the amount of make-up you do or don't use and in order to show off the full face of yours!

3) THE NUMBER OF IDENTITIES IS ENDLESS! Now that you've shaved your head, you can be whoever you want to be. Say you're not feeling the bald head today and you don't feel like wearing makeup. You can always make a trip to the nearest Beauty Supply store and buy a wig. You can go all out and buy human hair that'll last six or more months. Or you can buy a simple $30 wig and rock it for about a month. Want to be Mama Rose? How about Sally Bowles? What about Tina Turner? Maybe you're feeling like Beyonce today? The possibilities are endless.

4) It's great for jokes and icebreakers. When people see that you are comfortable and confident in your change of appearance, they will begin to notice how you move and notice that it is OK to still joke with someone who is, seemingly going through a lot at that moment. For example, when someone says, "OMG. I hate when my hair gets in my face." You can simply say, "Same." And I can almost guarantee that someone will laugh at that.

What I'm trying to say is, think twice about shaving your head, of course, but don't let being fed up stop you in your life. If anything, being bald opens up more opportunities for you personally. There is a strength when someone cuts their hair off and are still able to keep their head high. If you are on your way to doing this, do not get discouraged and if you don't like it, you could always wear a wig.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
