It's that heartbeat in between. Between the previous 23.5 hours and the moment we find out just how far we came this year. Silence. Anticipation. Hope. Even worry. Did we make it? Did we do what we set out for?
$507,205.14. That's how it went. Now it's time to do it again, and to go even farther.
UGA Miracle isn't just about Dance Marathon. It goes far beyond that. It's a commitment that encompasses far more than those 24 hours. Dance Marathon is the culmination and celebration of UGA Miracle's journey each year to make a difference in the lives of so many children, only part of which is raising money. You see, we are not raising money for an inanimate cause or unidentifiable group. It's for the kids. The living, breathing little miracles that are stronger and more inspiring than anything I've ever known.
This weekend, Dance Marathon 2015 will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and end at 10 a.m. Sunday. There are going to be around 46 Miracle families attending this year, some staying the whole 24 hours. For the families and Miracle participants, Dance Marathon is a 24-hour whirlwind of cool things to do. Miracle families open up about their own stories and there is even a kids' talent show, letting the Miracle kids showcase their silly sides and hidden talents. With theme hours ranging from 80's workout to pajama party to tacky holiday, there will be no shortage of fun and bonding between everyone at DM.
It's hard to say who helps who more: UGA Miracle or the Miracle kids. These kids bring so much joy and meaning to the people they touch around them, and it is an honor to be able to help, even a little, in any way possible.
Need more motivation? Here are some favorite moments of Miracle members at last year's Dance Marathon that tell just how amazing of an experience it truly is.
"There is absolutely no better feeling after 24 hours of running, jumping, singing, dancing, yelling, playing, laughing, squatting, but NEVER sitting, to hear sweet Mrs. Kelli Hopkins personally thanking everyone in the room that chose to stand in honor of her three children that could not. That was the moment that I realized that from $1 to $500,000, from a simple smile to an hour-long piggy back ride, from just your presence to an executive board role, every single thing we do matters" -Pearce Lane, Family Relations Co-Chair
"Definitely the total reveal. It was so cool to see the impact that we can make when we come together. And it was incredible to know that I had a hand in helping surpass our 'Mt. Everest' goal we set last year. The reaction of the kids and families also made what we spent so much effort raising money for so real and worth every second. Everyone was so vulnerable after 24 hours of hearing family stories, and it was the moment I realized how important our efforts really are!" -Abby Chenault, Family Relations
"I think one of my favorite moments from Dance Marathon last year was when I met my friend Nicholas. Nicholas had been receiving treatment in the Day Rehab Unit at CHOA, and the program had come to perform at DM. I had been contacted by a mutual family friend telling me about how a child from my hometown was coming, so I immediately welcomed him with a big hug and smile. Today, Nicholas is one of the reasons I dance and take the standing challenge, and he and his family are one of the new UGA Miracle families we get to celebrate!" -Harleigh Grace Turner, Color Group Captain
So where will you be this weekend at that "heartbeat in between?" I'm betting on Dance Marathon 2015!
FTK, always.
