Everyone goes through it. Everyone hates it. It's a waste of time. The DMV is always a long and interesting experience.
So, a fun thing happened to me and I found out my driver's license was expired. WHAT?! I know what you're thinking, but no I didn't find out from getting pulled over by a police officer, instead I found out when I went to the bank to get a temporary debit card because you know they can never actually deliver your new one the first time. They were like, "Umm you know your license is expired right?" Of course, I didn't. So, I casually laughed and looked at it and WHOA! Sure enough, it was definitely expired. Turns out you have to get a new license when you turn 18 not 19...
So I go to the DMV to get my new license before a whole year has passed (nobody wants to retake that driver's test) and some good advice; go earlier in the day rather than later. I mean it probably won't make much of a difference but at least you won't get locked in the room when they "close." So let's go through this ridiculous experience step by step.
1. I walk into the room and get my ticket for my "license renewal"
2. I notice the estimated time I will have to wait and freak when I see "90 minutes"
Of course you would never leave the DMV when you see the long wait because what if they skip a lot of people or the estimate was really far off? So the only logical option is to sit and wait....for 90 minutes.
3. I sit out in the lobby where I can still hear the numbers being called without being surrounded by a bunch of people. I meet a nice lady and we just complain to each other and bond over the long wait. (True friendship)
4. I check all my social media platforms in cycle multiple times (like a good millennial) and suddenly get a notification on Instagram from a girl who works for Odyssey!! Are you kidding me?! I read their articles all the time and I still have an hour wait left so I respond and she calls me and asks if I'd like to join the team. Ummm... Yes! THANK YOU!
5. After I casually accept, we are told to all move into the small DMV room because they close at 4 and have to lock the doors. Yep thank you, lock me in a small room with strangers. My favorite.
6. I sit on the floor with my knees up in a protective position and Snapchat way too many people of my struggles at the DMV. One of my friends offers to bring me coffee cause I still have 45 minutes left. God bless. I eventually get bored of my smart phone and tune into what's going on around me.
7. I sit there silently and notice the rest of the room is all listening to this hilarious man telling these elaborate stories of his six year old son. Instinctively, I listen too. The man explains how his son is being a total player in pre-school. The dad warns his son to be a gentleman or else he will embarrass the heck out of his son the next time he drops him off. The whole room is laughing because the guy is so animated.
8. FINALLY!!!! After only 82 minutes, my beautiful number of A127 is called and I walk through the threshold to behold my angel of a DMV lady ready to give me my new license and ticket to freedom! We talk and I can tell she's had a long day. She's already working over-time so I make some jokes about how much I hated my old photo and that I hope this one turns out well. The lady tells me she has taken my photo for my license every time since my first! WHAT?! That's crazy that I was always placed with her every time when it's purely a matter of luck.
I realize I just dissed her DMV photography skills and apologize saying "It's not you, it's me!" (cliché break-up line) and mention how I bet she's gotten better over the years. Then, we take the picture and IT IS ACTUALLY DECENT!! I praise her and she seems content and proud of herself. She registers me as a Republican so I can vote and all is good in the world!! I thank her and take my step out the door to freedom. I pay that ridiculous fee for my temporary paper license and get to my car. My friend that was bringing the coffee and I go to dinner and I'm a legal driver once again!
The next time you go to the DMV you might just get a job offer, hear a hilarious story, and make a new friend within that 90-minute wait. Thanks for another glorious experience, DMV!
