There are no words to express the struggle of glasses wearers- especially for those who need them to see, period. As if, being partially blind in both eyes isn't cruel enough, some genius way back when decided to make the horrifyingly spectacular contraption that are glasses. Okay, so those very contraptions are what makes it possible for wearers to mostly see like non-wearers, but the struggle is still very much real. While us wearers have accepted our fate of being chained to glasses and/or contacts for the rest of our lives and accepted the troubles that come with them, there is still something wearers have to say to non- wearers: we know!
1. We know we’re blind.
Trust us. We know.
2. Yes, we do know how many fingers you’re holding up.
We’re *insert sight here*- sighted. Just because our glasses are off, it does not mean we suddenly lose our common sense and the ability to count. Honestly.
3. Yes, we do know who you are.
Switching your seats or spinning me around (which is completely unnecessary, FYI) won’t make me suddenly lose my ability to recognize you or tell the difference between you and that stuffed toy in front of your face. Come on, dude.
4. Velma from "Scooby Doo" is not all of us.
But we can relate. In fact, some of us may find it very hard to see much of anything without our glasses. That doesn’t mean we don’t know the difference between a human being and a dog. Furthermore, our ability to run and fight doesn’t begin and end with glasses on our faces.
5. You like to change your hair color every month. Leave our eyes alone.
We get so much beef for wearing colored contacts by petty people. And here’s what we have to say, “back off". No one downs on you for changing your hair color. Why down on us for having the same fun with our eyes? Because ours actually look hot while you have candy for hair? Please, if I want the rainbow in my eyes, best believe I am going to get them.
6. No, you cannot try them on.
Please don’t. I literally just cleaned the lenses, their upside-down and you’ll ruin your eyesight. Why would you willingly do that?
7. We know our glasses are slipping.
It’s on our face, on one of the most sensitive parts of our body, literally right in front of us. We’ve just become masters at adapting to our glasses level to the absolute limit before straining our eyes even more. If it doesn’t bother us, leave it alone. It’s not our fault your uncomfortable.
8. No we cannot always tell when our lenses are dirty.
Not until we take them off anyway. We do develop a time table in our head that have grown instinctive to cleaning our glasses as well as pushing them up back in place. Don’t worry, we’ve got it covered
9. Don’t adjust our glasses without permission.
Please, I am begging you, don’t. Like those with OCD, we have a special way of wearing our glasses that best suit us. Do not assume that it’s fine or okay to reach for our face, near our eyes to push up glasses further because you think it’s right. A) Personal space violation, B) you just smudged up our lenses and C) just don’t. You will get slapped. The only exception is if and when we ask you and only to be touched by the frame on the bridge of the nose- never the actual lens. Not ever.
10. Don’t wear or complain about no lens glasses around us.
You may think it’s innocent fun, but you’re parodying our entire lives. It’s rude and annoying. There is nothing chic or cool about wearing glasses- unless you have transition. Then glasses suck a little less.
11. Transition glasses and colored contact are life.
You’ll never understand.
