Give Your Local Scene A Shot

The local bands need love too.

Are you feeling sick of the same music you hear on the radio every day? Or maybe you’re like me and you’re really not into the mainstream stuff, but you still tend to get sick of listening to your same favorite bands over and over again. Well, have you ever thought of giving your local music scene a try?

Local music scenes tend to all be very diverse in what they can bring to the table and it mostly depends on the area that you live in when it comes to what you can find. That tends to be the first question people ask, how exactly do you find the local music scene? A great place to start is bars, to be honest. Many bars will hire the local bands because they’re so cheap. Another great way to find your local scene is to pay attention to the openers when you’re going to see a bigger show. If the band isn’t originally on the set list, they’re probably a local band the venue was gracious enough to give some play time to.

The thing about local bands is that they can actually be the best bands out there. There is so much undiscovered talent out there that lives in the form of local bands. It is so hard to make it in the music industry anymore and without a great backing from fans, so many bands that have the potential to make it big just cannot go anywhere. So once you find your local scene and have found some bands you like, do not hesitate to pay that measly $5 they’re asking for their CD. Trust me, they need it.

Don’t be afraid to venture out into your local scene either. It can seem like a bit of a daunting task as most bands will try to fill the bars and venues with their friends and you might be one of the only few in there who doesn’t directly know the band. But I can guarantee you that if the band realizes there are some people in there enjoying their music that aren’t already friends with them, it will make their night. I have been to shows where my group of friends and I were the only ones in the crowd besides the other bands that had played or were playing that night, and the band paid us so much extra attention that it was one of the better concerts I’ve been to. And that’s the other great thing with local bands, they give their fans so much extra attention and care. They truly appreciate everything their fans do for them.

Just remember, all of those big bands you listen to were once local bands struggling to make it. If no one would have paid attention to them while they were still trying to make it in the scene, they wouldn’t have been able to get to where they are today. So go out there, find a favorite local band and stick with them. It’ll be a great thing to watch your favorite band grow into super stars one day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
