Ask anyone who has ever been to my house and they will tell you that they’ve probably watched “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” there. You can easily assume that this movie is very near and dear to my heart.
You would have to be living under a rock to not know that Fox has remade it with a brand new cast, with Alabama native, Laverne Cox as the villainous Dr. Frank-N-furter. I found the announcement of Laverne Cox in that role, originally made famous by Tim Curry, to be such a good choice that I never once considered that people would actually be against it.
The usual complaints consisted of the declaration that no one could ever do it better than Tim Curry and that her singing voice wasn’t as great. Yes, Tim Curry is divine, wonderful and terrific in the role of the “sweet transvestite,” but he is old and it is time to move on and give the musical a chance to update and reach new audiences. Besides, I don’t know why people are complaining about Cox’s singing because I had a very difficult time discerning whether or not they had even recorded new music for the trailer.
Besides, we will be seeing Tim Curry again in the remake as the criminologist. That is what really matters.
I love the original film cast, I really do, especially since most of them originated the roles in the original stage version titled “The Rocky Horror Show,” but my love for this musical transcends the people who were the originals. I love the music, the story, the way everything is hilariously raunchy and celebratory. I do not care who tells the story as long as the story gets told.
I want a new audience to watch this musical and fall in love the same way I did. I want them to do the “Time Warp” and jump to the left. Nothing is being fundamentally changed, considering the original script developed by Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman is what will be used. The legendary Kenny Ortega is directing. Everything is in good hands.
The TV movie will not be the same as the 1975 cult classic, but it does not have to be. It can be its own film and stand by itself, but I promise I won’t be crying as I watch Adam Lambert sing “Hot Patootie”. I love Meat Loaf, but I also love Adam Lambert. The cast assembled for the remake is better than what I could have come up with on my own. Reeve Carney as the very off-kilter Riff-Raff was a brilliant choice due to his role in “Penny Dreadful” as Dorian Grey, who is an equal amount of creepy. Christina Millian as Magenta, while a considerably odder choice, is not necessarily a bad one. I even like Victoria Justice as Janet Weiss. Sure, she's a former Nickelodeon girl, but that makes the casting even better.
I encourage you to give this remake a chance. Stories are meant to be told in new and exciting ways. Besides, the trailer have been awesome. I highly recommend the latest one.
I know I shiver in anticipation.
