Give a Shit

Because no one else will if you don't.

We all know the kid who, after graduating high school, hasn't done much but has somehow gone through what seems like 100 jobs. You never really hear about what they’re doing in the real world but can see their posts online about the crazy party they attended last Wednesday.

By no means is this meant to attack those actually trying to keep a steady job and get back on their feet and maybe go out once a week or so. However, I do know plenty of people my age who don’t seem to give a shit about anything.

Who knows? Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me because I've met and seen enough of these people in my lifetime to wonder why they don’t care about anything.

Sorry to say, but at this point in life, you're considered an adult and expected to do something with your life. I'm not saying you need to find the cure to cancer or end world hunger. But contributing to society by getting (and keeping a job), not spending your money EVERY NIGHT at the bar, and moving out of your parents' basement.

Same if you are in college paying the big bucks. You’re paying the money, so why not try? Don't get me wrong, I have skipped my fair share of classes, but not on a regular basis to where people wondered if I still went to the school or not. At least do the bare minimum to get by. And if you're just going to school to party and what not, save yourself the money and time.

Find a steady job with steady pay. You've basically opened a tab on your friends’ checking account. It stresses you out and the others around you whether you realize it or not. The parents you still live with want you to do better than this for yourself. So for god's sake, get off your ass and do something productive so you can buy McDonald's for yourself for once.

I'm a firm believer in living up to your potential, however high that may be. I understand not everyone can be CEO of a Fortune 500 company, but if going to school online while keeping a part time job is your first step, then by all means, take a stride.

Find your niche. I know plenty of people for whom school isn't their thing. Whatever. I understand that. Find your thing though. If you like cooking, go to a couple culinary classes. You like building stuff. The world needs people like you. Massage therapy. Get @ me. There has to be something other than sleeping that interests you.

All I'm asking is that you give a shit about something bigger than yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
