*Gets on soapbox* Buckle your seat belts ladies and gentlemen because I'm sharing my opinion. Everyone has one, and mine is typically unpopular. But, because of my first amendment right, you get to hear it anyways. :)
July 4, 1776, America declared independence from a tyrannic government. The founding fathers wanted nothing more than the people of this great land to be free to live their lives without much interference from a government entirely out of touch with what it's citizens dealt with on a daily basis. They wanted freedom. Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press..so on and so forth. "Give me liberty or give me death" was the battle cry of the revolution. These were a people desperate to live a life without the government involved.
Flash forward 240 years later. The founding fathers have rolled over in their graves so many times by now it probably looks like a tractor has been through with a plow. George Washington's ghost is laughing in our faces with a big "I told you so" as he watches party politics divide the country more and more with each issue. The government is growing by the day, which also means individual freedom is shrinking.
The job of the government is to protect the rights of the average American. That is all. The government is not supposed to have any say over your personal life. As long as you aren't infringing on the rights of anyone else, I believe you should be able to do whatever makes you happy.
Now here's somewhere I need some enlightenment. I need to know how the government thinks they're going to fix problems with more laws. 9 times out of 10 the people causing the problem, are the same kind of people that don't follow laws!
Example 1: Here in NC, we have HB2. HB2 was supposedly put into place to protect women and children from perverts dressed as women attempting to use the same restroom as them. Now, from my experience with people, the people that have intentions to rape, photograph, or just be plain creepy, are not the same people that are going to think to themselves "oh that darn law, I can't go in that bathroom to rape that little girl!"
Example 2: Gun control. Yes, a mental health check and a background check are sound precautions when offering someone a firearm. Most Americans can agree on this. Making assault weapons, or guns in general, illegal will NOT keep them out of the hands of those with the intent to kill masses. I'm sure we all know someone who uses marijuana, which is an illegal substance in most states, did that make it difficult for the user to obtain? Probably not.
The government has no way of controlling what every American does, but the more we let them try, the more the law abiding citizens are going to suffer. Let the people be the people, and if you don't know what that means, you've been in Washington too long.
