Should Disney give Elsa a girlfriend? There are two sides to this argument. "Yes, they should give her a girlfriend" and "No, they should not give her a girlfriend." This is my opinion as a woman of the LGBT community.
In my opinion, it would be a good idea to show kids that it is OK to be who you are. There are too many parents who will condemn their child for being something that they do not understand and this leads to suicides—but this is getting off topic. The main question here is if Disney should give Elsa a girlfriend.
Yes, it would be a good idea but at the same time, it would not be a good idea. Let's take a look at both sides of this debate.
Yes, it would be a good idea. It would be a good idea because it would show kids that it is OK to be gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender or queer (questioning but not sure who you are attracted to). This would open more doors for Disney because they are making big steps to diversify the company. They will be having the first Polynesian princess named Moana. They are planning on diversifying, and having a first openly gay or lesbian princess would be a big step. Other shows and movies are starting to open up to this “taboo” subject. Marvel is coming out with an openly gay superhero and a pansexual superhero. Television shows have been showing openly gay and proud characters, showing the world that it is OK to be gay and be proud of it.
Now, for the other side of this coin. No, it would not be a good idea for Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend. This is not from a homophobic standpoint. Elsa was portrayed as a strong and independent woman. She was ruling her own kingdom without the help of anyone, man or woman. Pairing her with someone would give children, especially young impressionable girls that you always need someone there with you or else you are not complete without someone there with you. You can do great things on your own and not know it if you are being held down by someone else. Another reason why it would not be a good idea is the fact that there are homophobic parents out there who will lash out against this movement. It would possibly damage Disney depending on how many people would strike out against it. This could lead to bigger problems than what it seems like it would. There are people out there who could cause more damage to their children by lashing out and not know that they are creating a dangerous situation for the child.
In other words, this question is like a double-edged sword. Yes, it would be a great idea for Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend. On the other hand, it is also dangerous to give Elsa a girlfriend because it could cause more harm than good. What is your position on this?
