Netflix has spread its wings in recent years, now featuring more and more Netflix Original Movies and Series. One of their most recent ones is "Girlboss" and is 'loosely based' on the memoir of Sophia Amoruso. The show centers around a young Sophia who unexpectedly finds her passion for fashion. After realizing that she doesn't like working for other people and does not want to spend the rest of her life doing that, she turns to reselling vintage clothing with her own twist online. This new business, which she names "Nasty Gal Vintage," goes through its highs and lows as the show progresses. As the show is loosely based on real events, you can purchase clothes from Nasty Gal at http://www.nastygal.com/.
The thirteen episode series seemed to go by very quick, which would make sense as they are only thirty-minute episodes. Overall, the series had a fun and silly tone but also did a very nice job of being serious and more touching. The first few episodes were tough to get through, but after those, it was nothing but smooth sailing and laughing all the way. The comedy throughout the show was wonderful, never seeming too pressed or fake. The humor, although vulgar at sometimes, felt real, it didn't feel like something scripted. Most of that has to do with the main actress Britt Robertson.
Robertson's acting skills often carried the rest of the show with her, as almost all of her scenes felt and looked very natural. She was able to give off the impression that it actually was her life we were watching and not just a TV show. Robertson perfectly played the role of a young business owner struggling to make their mark in the world. Her chemistry with the other actors and actresses really sold the idea that it was a true story, especially that with Ellie Reed, who plays Sophia's best friend Annie in the show. Their friendship seemed like it had lasted a thousand years and the two fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
The actual plot of the story was full of everything you could want from a good TV show: love, heartbreak, sex, laughter, excitement, and anger. Because the series was loosely based on the memoir by Sophia Armoruso, it should be said that the story was written very well also. All of the episodes flowed together very well, and even though the entire show took place over the course of two to three years, it never felt like it was dragging. Through a marvelously produced series, it was hard not fall in love with Sophia during the show, and even harder not to fall in love with Nasty Gal Vintage.
