I hate the cold wind, the snow blowing on my face, and the feeling of freezing socks after getting wet by snow. These are my thoughts, from a guy who has seen snow every winter for 19 years, while my friend said, "Snow is the best thing I've ever seen in my life!"
My best friend, Wendy -- a freshman from Taiwan, where there's barely snow even during the winter, said snow is the most beautiful scene she has ever seen. She called me at seven in the morning on Feb. 5 when the snow storm happened. "It's snowing! It's snowing! Wake up, Jack! Let's go out and build a snowman!" It was a Friday, and classes were canceled because of the snow, so I was rejoicing about the day off and wanted to stay in my bed for a while. However, happy dreams never last long.
I met Wendy after a quick shower. I could not refresh from tiredness, even after seeing her jump around while staring outside the glass door. She bolted out the door and rushed into the snow. She was like an acrobat, swinging around the backyard of our dormitory. It was kind of funny to see a young adult jump around like a child, and it was enviable to see a person receive happiness from such a simple thing.
She took off her gloves and picked up snow from the ground. She looked at the white snow as though they were pearls. The snow seemed no longer like something cold or cruel that could take away warmth form your body. Moreover, it seemed soft and harmless; something that can purify your heart from sadness.
She laid in the snow, sweeping her arms and legs, and left the impression of her body on the ground. I never imagined that I would do the same thing, but I was touched by that simple and easily gained happiness. What's more, she opened her mouth and waited for the snowflakes to fall inside. She told me that she wanted to taste the flavor of snow. I couldn't help but smile at what she said.
For someone who has lived in a place that is too hot to have snow during the winter, snow is a treasure. Wendy told me the most exciting part of coming to New York is that she can see the snow. However, for people like me who have seen snow every winter and have suffered inconveniences caused by the snow, it is just a normal part of our lives that we take for granted.
This made me start thinking about our lives; we live around phenomena that are common to us and we choose to ignore them while these things we see every single day might be precious to others. We work hard to look for happiness and are never satisfied with what we already have. We keep moving up in society and getting new objects to excite us. If we pay attention to what's around us and treasure them, we may be the happiest people in the world.
