What It's Really Like Being The Only Girl Sibling

What It's Really Like Being The Only Girl Sibling

And on the 15th day of September and the seventh day of October, God created my two older brothers, and God saw that it was good.

An older brother is a special gift from God. Luckily for me, God blessed me with two of them. Sure, there are days full of nitpicking at each other over who is going to sit in the dreaded middle seat on road trips and arguing over what television channel to watch. Growing up being the only girl sibling in the family was quite the experience, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I always had a friend to hang out with.

Whether this included playing catch with your older brothers or wrestling with them, childhood was never boring. The best parts were when your brothers would play with Barbies or your dollhouse with you.

I always had two people watching over me.

You've probably heard that an older brother is protective of their little sister, and this—my friends—is the truth. Older brothers will tell you a guy is bad news, even though you go after him anyway. When that guy really did turn out to be bad news and you are left heartbroken, instead of saying "I told you so", they will be there to pick you up. An older brother is one guy that will never break your heart.

I always had a mentor and role model.

Both of my older brothers played tennis in high school, and it is a sport I learned to love. My brother Cody was a senior when I was a freshman and I saw him compete in a district tennis tournament. That's when I decided that I wanted to become a great tennis player just like him. My brothers both motivated me and practiced with me on the court. This led to them being my loudest fan club at my matches.

I always had an honest opinion.

So your brothers don't like your outfit or tell you that you are wearing too much makeup...A brother isn't going to sugar coat things.

A hot shower was first come first serve.

If you sleep in, you might as well sleep in an hour longer because that shower water is already ice cold and will be for a while.

The sports channel trumps reality television.

Being the only girl with two older brothers plus a father who wants to watch every sport event and every highlight on television, you might as well go to your friends house to watch "The Bachelorette."

When both of my brothers eventually moved out, I realized how much I missed them.

It wasn't until my brothers went to college that I realized how much they meant to me. Let me tell you, being the only child at home is boring. I would come home from school and missed my brothers' company. It's hard being the youngest child because you watch all your siblings become adults while you are still in the process of growing up. Holidays where your whole family is at home start to become a little more special to you.

I love you, Jordan and Cody.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
