I am someone who has a massive addiction to documentaries. It's crazy. I have probably seen more than most people. There is one documentary however, that stands out more than any other for me. This one is called Girl Rising.
I am what you may call a modern day Feminist. Yes, I wear a bra. Yes, I shave my pits. Yes, I cook and clean at home for my husband. But, I am so proud to be a strong, opinionated, powerful woman. I love and admire other powerful, educated and independent women. That is why this documentary resonated with me.
Girl Rising tells the story of nine girls from different parts of the world who face many challenges. Things like child slavery, arranged marriage and other social injustices. They use the power of storytelling to make a very important point. Educating girls is a key element in progressing and transforming our societies.
Lets talk facts: Girls who get educated marry later, have less children, earn higher wages and educate the children they do have. Currently 65 million girls are not in school all over the world. Among the 123 million people ages 15-24 who can not read or write 61% are female. Educated mothers are twice as likely to send their children to school. Now this one is quite shocking for me, A child born to a mother who can read or write is 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5.
As a woman this was a hard watch, but a necessary one. We must advocate and stand up for our girls. We must inspire, challenge and motivate them. We must be beacons of light and show young women the importance of education. But, most importantly, we MUST lead by example. We MUST love ourselves. We MUST love each other.
Please take the time and watch this awesome film. It will hit home for so many women. It is so important to keep the next generation at the forefront of our thoughts and actions.
Love, Peace, Awareness.
