Anyone that knows me knows that I love to watch Netflix whenever I get the chance. Well, last year, I decided to try to watch some new shows that I hadn’t watched before. I have always loved fashion, mysteries and strong characters. To my surprise, Netflix added a show that combined those elements and more into one! The Australian written and produced hit show, "Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries," is one show that I have actually become obsessed with. This show is based on a series of books of the same name by author Kerry Greenwood. The title character, Phryne Fisher, is a woman to be reckoned with. She has traveled the world, learned to speak many languages, drives her own car, dresses impeccably and is totally independent. This is extremely important because this show is set in the 1920s. It was a time where women got a chance to vote for the first time and as it was considered the “roaring 20s,” we (women) were exploring our potential to be more than what society told us we could be. With that said, here are a few reasons why you should give Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries a chance:

First, Phryne is always impeccably dressed. Now, call me crazy, but I LOVE Phryne’s wardrobe. I am a vintage-loving young woman, so every outfit she wears in an episode (trust me, there are many wardrobe changes!), it just truly makes me happy. I love how she puts her outfits together down to last detail of a feather on the side of her hat. She experiments with scarves, sunglasses and pants, too! Every outfit is elegant, yet dressy-casual, if you will. As she told another character in season two of the show, “A woman should dress first and foremost for herself.” So take advice from Phryne Fisher and wear what makes you feel confident and happy within yourself.

Second, Phryne is fiercely independent. In the show, Phryne is a woman ahead of her time. She has her own home, with one butler. She explores the world on her own and she drives her own car. I remember in one particular episode where there was an accident victim, who was a woman, and the men in the episode criticized the circumstances around the crime scene. Phryne stood up to the men and declared that a woman is as capable as any man in learning to drive properly. You tell them, Miss Fisher! Once again, the above scenario was set in the 1920s.

Lastly, Phryne is smart and witty. If you haven’t pieced it together, Phryne is a lady detective, as the show puts it. I think that is pretty cool. Along with Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, she solves kidnappings and murders with heels on, I might add. With the help of some loyal friends, she fights crime and brings justice to the city that she loves.

Now, if a vintage 1920s, strong female led television series isn’t your cup of tea, that is fine, but I think the character of Phryne is just awesome. Phryne truly shows that you can achieve what you put your mind to and give the world a dose of girl power, too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
