Only Cory and Topanga could raise a daughter who is brave enough, at 14 years old, to stand up to the world about her sexuality. Rowan Blanchard, who plays Riley Matthews in "Girl Meets World," recently stated that she identifies as queer.
Blanchard claims that in her past she has only found interest in boys, but she is not going to exclude the idea of liking girls. She does not want to identify herself with any specific gender-related label, therefore, she identifies herself as queer.
According to the PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), queer is an umbrella term for those that "would rather not identify with any particular label, the gender fluid bisexual, the gender fluid heterosexual, the questioning LGBT person, and the person who just doesn't feel like they quite fit in to societal norms and wants to bond with a community over that."
Blanchard wishes to do just that.
With Blanchard being open in her sexual identity, she did receive some harsh comments. However, the 14-year-old girl handled herself gracefully and with dignity.
This week, Blanchard penned an essay for Rookie magazine. She addressed the importance of "just existing," as she mentioned in her tweet. She has decided to "quit apologizing for existing." She also gave out the three steps she took to "trust myself enough to know that I don't always have to say sorry for myself," including being "able to be alone."
"If you listen closely to the tiny voice in your head, the calm one, that is you talking," Blanchard said. "And if you turn up the volume on it and try to listen, it blocks all the other voices out." At 14, Blanchard has already taken control of her own life. This young teenager is not afraid to stand up for her self worth and be open to new opportunities.
Go Rowan Blanchard!
