It only took 9 years, but finally my favorite show has been brought back to life. Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life was released on Friday, November 25th and I've never felt so alive. Four episodes are hardly enough to satisfy me, but I'll take it.
Each episode reaches over a three months span, each a different season of the year. The trailer left us all with tons of burning questions about how Lorelei and Luke were doing, who Rory had (or hadn't) ended up with, how Emily was doing after Richard's death (R.I.P. Edward Hermann - we miss you), and even more seriously, what's up with that pig? Well, all of our questions were answered, that's for sure.
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
Episode 1 - WINTER: I started off the first 90-minute episode hopeful. Hope turned to confusion, confusion to anger, anger to more confusion, and more confusion to just feeling like I wasn't even sure what was happening in my own life, let alone Rory and Lorelei's lives. Thankfully, Lorelei and Luke are still together after nine (wow) years. I can't say I'm surprised (but I also kind of am). Rory is also in a relationship. You want to guess who? I'll wait... NOT LOGAN. NOT JESS. DEFINITELY NOT DEAN. This is not how I expected things to go. She's dating a random guy (for apparently two years already) named Paul or Peter. He's a very forgettable guy and so she keeps forgetting to break up with him. So the stage is set, she's dating someone in the states but flying back and forth to London for work. Turns out while in London, she's staying with Logan and by staying with Logan I mean she is definitely dating Logan on the sly and not telling Lorelei so you know something funky is going on.
Episode 2 - SPRING: The thing I remember most about episode three is that for the first time ever I saw Mr. Kim, Lane's father and wow I just have to say I thought he was fake and it was very exciting. Then while in London, Logan and Rory are eating and suddenly Mitchum (ew) Huntzberger is there sitting next to Logan and talking to Rory about an interview. He mentions a party of some sort that Logan is expect to attend and asks if Odette will be coming too. Prepare yourself. Because Odette is Logan's French, heiress fiancee. Rory, the girl that used to be so perfect and would never do anything wrong is sleeping with an engaged man. This is where the disappoint really started. They took my favorite television character of all time (besides Blair Waldorf of course) and turned her into someone with compromised morals.
Episode 3 - SUMMER: I hate to say this, but this episode was fairly forgettable. Rory and Lorelei are both brought to their breaking points (as they always are). Rory proposed her only idea for a book to her mother who declines to let her do it because it's about their life. Lorelei doesn't want the world to know how their life has been. It's private but Rory refuses to accept that. And as we all know, when Lorelei has problems with Rory, Lorelei has problems with everyone, including Luke. The best (and definitely worst) part of this episode was Stars Hollow: The Musical. I can't explain this as anything other than ten minutes of "wow what am I watching right now?" Finally Lorelei announces that she's going to do Wild (definitely the book, not the movie). I can't imagine Lorelei Gilmore trekking through the wild, but okay, girl. You do you. Also, Rory is now the editor of the Stars Hollow Gazette, so that's pretty cool.
Episode 3 - FALL: For a long time we've all been wondering what those final four words Amy Sherman-Pallidino had thought up for Gilmore Girls were. They are so important. They broke my heart. I don't know how I feel anymore. But first, we have to talk about Lorelei in the woods (ha). Well, she didn't even make it there. She made it to a clearing where she called Emily and told her what her favorite memory of Richard was through tears. In episode one we learned that at the funeral Lorelei hadn't given a good answer to this question, so now she was providing her true answer. It was emotional. And then after a few accidental stress calls, Logan shows up with the Life and Death Brigade to cheer Rory up. He loves her obviously and I think that's what upsets me most about the revival. They love each other, but they aren't together. Lorelei gives Rory her blessing to finish the book about their lives and she decides to do so in the comfort of Richard's office. Rory looks to her father to find out how he feels about how Lorelei raised her on her own and finds that he thinks it turned out the best that it could. Meanwhile, Emily (who has allowed the new maid's entire family to move in with her) is at their country house and she seems to be doing much better in all respects (including attitude). Lorelei returns from her not-so-Wild trip and Luke freaks out thinking she's going to break up with him. But no sir she did not. She instead told him that she wanted to get married! FINALLY! They definitely did it this time (10 hours early in fact) and this is where the final scene takes place. These words will haunt me forever. "Mom?" "Yeah?" "I'm pregnant." It only took four words to ruin my life.
Overall, I'm disappointed in Rory's life choices. I'm disappointed that Rory didn't end up with anyone and that she's going to be raising a baby alone. I'm disappointed that they left the show so open ended when it was supposed to give me closure. But I'm also happy that Lorelei found happiness finally and that Emily is okay on her own. I understand, because maybe they'll decide this isn't the end of my favorite show. But for now I'm highly upset and I can't believe Amy Sherman-Pallidino did this to me. Again.
