The Gift Only A White Man Has

White privilege gone too far

When you walk into a room do you ever wonder who else will be in that room? Do you ever think you will most likely be one of the few, a minority? If you are a white person the answer is most likely not. In fact, thoughts like this most likely have never even come across your mind until now. This is just one of the many factors that comprise White Privilege. Nowadays, many see the word "privilege" and quickly assume that their life's hard work is being attacked. However, I am here to tell you that that is not the case. What this "privilege" means is that our society has created an environment that contains fewer obstacles for light-skinned people. Now, of course, you still have to work hard for that 4.0 GPA, study hard for all your interviews and balance all your extracurricular activities and schoolwork. Don't worry no one is going to take that away from you. Conversely, you don't have to worry about whether or not your name and hair look professional enough, whether your skin tone will frighten others, or whether people will finally stop questioning your citizenry. Life is undoubtedly hard regardless of race, but now imagine constantly feeling judged and questioned for features of yourself that you were born with.

Now let's take this one step further and insert gender. Our society, as many societies have throughout time, has a social hierarchy. Women of all races have always been subject to the whim of our male counterparts. And amongst males themselves there is a spectrum between safe and harmless to toxic and dangerous. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize which race has been fashioned by what stereotypes. I mean all you have to do is listen to your parents or grandparents. The fact is these race problems aren't far and gone, but very much so alive in many of our homes and across this nation. Now this is where I would like to insert White Male Privilege. As stated before white privilege consists of all the small benefits throughout life that many white people are fortunate to have. Now fit a penis between your legs and you've just hit the lottery.

I would like to reiterate that I fully comprehend that life is not easy. But as many of you have already guessed I am stating that white males have numerous more benefits than women and all other men. Men can be assertive without being "bitchy" and white men can speak "proper" English without causing a commotion. White men have been the Prince Charmings from the beginning of cinematic television. Even white rapists are less likely to serve jail time if any at all. But then again, everyone makes mistakes here and there. And we all know rape isn't really a serious crime unless it's committed by a person of color. Time and time again I see many white folk bash people of color for making issues a "race thing". However, answer me this: is it really that bad to see your gender and race cast as the bad guy over and over again? I mean it can't be any worse than have your race and gender dragged through the dirt for over hundreds of years right? Seems to me that certain issues just can't be helped unless it's a white man's livelihood at stake.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
