Thursday night I was sitting in my local theater with my 14-year-old brother waiting for the new "Ghostbusters" movie to start. As it began, I wasn't sure what to expect. This was new territory, an action/comedy with an all female main cast, with the exception of Chris Hemsworth. To be honest, I was extremely excited for this movie.
I remember when I found out that they were rebooting the "Ghostbusters" franschise with women, I was over the moon. I couldn't wait to see women be funny and smart on the big screen. Once I found out who the cast was, I knew it was going to be worth the wait. The movie begins and it's everything I wish a younger version of me had to watch. When I was younger, and I feel like a lot girls have had the same experience, I totally bought into the idea that if you were pretty you weren't smart, and if you were smart you couldn't be pretty. That's not how my parents raised me, but it was something that society was selling and I was willing to buy. I had the idea that men were the only you who can be really smart and do the important jobs. Women don't do hard things. What was so beautiful about "Ghostbusters" was that it looked at these very different women. They are beautiful and have different talents. They are willing to do hard, unglamorous jobs. In the movie, the Ghostbusters themselves seriously believe that what they are doing is right, even when the world around them doesn't. It doesn't matter what the world says, you have to do what makes you happy.
Another thing why "Ghostbusters" is so important is simply that the main cast, excluding Chris Hemsworth, are women. It's the first action movie were the whole team is made up of women. It tells little and big girls that you can be the lead hero. You are not there to play side kick or be the plot device so the lead male can have a love interest. You can play a role that was originated by a man. Hopefully this will be the push Hollywood needs to create more well rounded roles for women.
The "Ghostbusters" reboot is great. Not only is it action packed and funny, but it gives girls something achieve. If these four very funny, very pretty, and very smart women can be leads in a movie that were originated by men why can't we?
