Has anyone ever wondered what life would be like when everyone was a "proper" gentleman or "proper" lady? Our society has strayed far from the "proper" lifestyle. When that was around, men would hold doors open for ladies, help them get into carriages, kiss their hands and ask them to dance. When they went on walks, the gentleman always helped the lady stand after sitting or offered his arm to escort her. Why have we, as a society, strayed so far away from this style?
In today's society men walk in front of girls, walk away from them as they rise, grabs them on a dance floor without asking, gets into the car first and then waits impatiently for them to get in. While today's woman is independent and does not want to rely on a man all the time, it's always the thought that counts.
In the South, you hear about the "Southern Belles" and the "Southern Gentlemen." While there are not people who claim those titles, there are those who were raised to be a southern gentleman. I took advice from a friend and made a list of the things I'm looking for in a guy so that if someone does not meet my expectations, I know that he is not who God plans for me. I do not claim the title "Southern Belle," but I do claim to have manners and want a guy who will treat me with respect.
As a Southern Gentleman, there are certain characteristics that stand out to women. We do not want them to be perfect all the time; we just wish there was respect for feelings and emotions portrayed. These next eight things are aspects of a "Southern Gentleman" that are wanted by girls.
1. Opens the door for her.
2. Pulls out her chair.
3. Helps her with her coat.
4. Give up his seat/jacket.
5. Stands when she enters a room.
6. Actually listens to her.
7. Is trustworthy.
8. Asks her father's permission to court/date her and to marry her.
These are the things that make girls swoon and show her that the man she is with is the right man for her. He respects her enough to publicly show it and to privately ask for her hand.
