Generation Y. Millennials. However you like to be referred to, they’re the same age range.
If you’re in this age range like me, you might still be in college – just like me.
Lately, there has been a lot going on in the news involving one major subject: politics. With the presidential election right around the corner, you could be one of those people that’s highly involved in politics, or you could be someone who does not care about politics. Until recently, I used to fall in the second group.
These past couple months I’ve been getting more interested, which is something our generation needs to get more involved with. I was one of those people that was never interested and couldn’t tell you if I was Republican or Democrat because I wasn’t labeling myself as one or the other because I couldn't care less. But as I have gotten older and have become part of the older group of people that are in college (juniors/seniors), I have decided that I need to learn more; I need to become more politically involved. I am part of this generation, and I need to become more engaged with it. The presidential election and who becomes president is going to affect me – especially since within the next couple years I’ll be out of college and becoming invested in companies and the work and living environment, and I have to make sure that the country is in good hands. This election affects my future now more than any other has in the past.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has not given any thought to politics, and not the only one who didn’t care. But now I’m here saying that everyone should care. We also need to make sure to watch what our government is doing right and wrong, because one day, one of us in Generation Y will be the next president. Others among us will also be the vice president, a member of the Supreme Court, the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, and so on. We need to make sure we are ready to support this country – another reason we need to become politically involved.
Politics may sound like a boring subject to those who haven't cared or maybe just didn't want to become involved for various reasons. But it isn't a boring subject; set the reasons aside, because politics is actually really intriguing.
So now is the time the people of generation Y (millennials) to get out and vote. Before the election, learn more, so you're not just voting for someone random to get the "I voted" sticker. Pick up a newspaper, read about politics, or follow CNN on Twitter to stay up to date on what candidates are or aren't saying. Do it now, start your involvement now.
