Girls are supposed wear make-up and wear dresses and present themselves in a polite manner. Girls are supposed to smile, wait for a man to make the first move, know how to cook and clean. If a girl gets married, she better have children. Girls are fragile, sensitive and have no knowledge on sports or cars. Girls are more fond of pastel colors; warm pinks and purples and greens. Girls need to be reminded that they are beautiful. Because they're so clueless all the time. It's the man who should be asking the girl out. Girls need curvy waist lines and perfect winged eyeliner to feel content with themselves. And what do girls consume? Salad and juice cleanse. And a whole lot of ignorance.
Boys are supposed to be tough from the day that come out of the womb. Boys don't cry, nor do they show emotion. Boys need to embrace their masculinity. Boys play sports and boys are jerks to girls so they can fit in with other boys. Boys need to be in authority. Boys like cars, reckless activities and working out. Boys eat man food, like burgers, or anything with a lot of meat. Boys wear cologne! Oh, and any type of clothing that doesn't resemble a sports Jersey, baggy T-shirt or a pair of basketball sneakers are deemed feminine. What are you wearing? A cardigan?
I'm not here to bash on a particular gender. I'm here to pull out the subconscious gender roles and gender conformities that society has engraved into our heads. Moreover, I'm here to tell you that the idea of gender is becoming more and more neutral every day.
For example, Jaden Smith, a young actor and son of Will Smith with an eclectic taste in fashion, has become a prominent figure in both the fashion industry and in the community of gender-fluidity.
Furthermore, we see iconic LGBTQ icon and TV show host Ellen DeGeneres rock a suit, tie and short spiked hair. You can even argue that her popularity, in terms, took part in initiating a short hair trend for young women to emulate. To rise beyond physical appearances, a plethora of hit movies such as the recent "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "The Hunger Games" trilogy feature exceptional lead female heroines, as opposed to the traditional male hero.
To embark on the topic of gender roles, ever since I was a young girl, my parents have scolded me time and time again that I had to behave and dress in a lady-like manner. If I began to eye an article of clothing in the men's side, my Mom would question me and tell me that I was looking on the wrong side. What do you mean wrong side? I'm an individual and if I like the style of men's clothes from time to time, then why am I restricted from even looking?
It's comforting for us as individuals to categorize everything. Labels give us a sense of belonging and organization. As understandable as that is, more and more individuals are opting out of the gender label. And here's why:
Society puts so much pressure on men and women. There are strict sets of rules for each gender to follow in order to conform to society's standards. Most of the time, celebrities unrealistically portray the slender, beautiful woman with gorgeous hair or the handsome, muscular man with the perfect amount of beard who wears a suit too well. Additionally, men have to articulate their toughness in society and avoid emotion at all costs while women have to maintain their beauty throughout their entire lives. But let's tune the focus onto the youth of America and why raising them without gender boundaries is a more realistic solution to a healthy childhood.
So what if your little girl wants to wear a snapback and baggier clothes? What if she wants short hair? What if your little boy wants to wear leggings? What if he wants to wear make-up to feel beautiful? Boys can be emotional too. Girls can get dirty under the hood of a car. There doesn't have to be a "man and woman" to every relationship. In fact, believing in that will only ensue ignorance. Remember! Gender is just a label, and gender roles are just an outdated trend.
Gender and gender roles are constructed by society. They will continue to exist if everyone decides to participate in them. It's still extremely hard to get everyone on board with the concept that gender roles should be terminated in its entirety. Just writing this article, trying my best not to be biased towards a particular gender, was a little taxing. Personally, I'm not completely educated in all the communities of gender that have been created, but I believe there is more than even hope that continues to circulate each day. And I'm always learning. Most importantly, simply being aware that gender roles are dying out is a great place to start.
Gender is created by society. Sex is the body parts you were born with.
