God Damn Independent. For those of you who don't know, that term is used to refer to a student not in Greek Life. How did that term turn into "Geed?" Personally, I think people are just too lazy to say the full name, which I can understand. What I don't understand is the derogatory use of it. People use it as a way to offend someone and show that they are better than them. That is not okay. Never has been and never will be. All Greeks were once "Geeds," meaning everyone is/was unaffiliated in their life. Why is there a constant need to show and act like you're better than someone?
There really is no difference between a Greek and a non-Greek. We both go to the same school, we both might even have the same classes together, which means we both have to endure the same amount of dreadful studying and cramming. Sincerely, the only difference between a Greek and a "Geed" is that a "Geed" isn't affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. I'm not trying to hate on my fellow Greek sisters and brothers, but sometimes I over hear the term being used in a very rude way and I feel embarrassed. Think about some of your parents. Mine, personally were not in Greek life whatsoever. Pretty sure my mom forgot that "Going Greek" was a thing until I told her last year as a freshman, that I wanted to go Greek. This being said, your parents were probably "Geeds" and would you want them hearing you use that word in a rude way? No!
When did this even start to become a fad in the college world? I've heard many of my non-affiliated friends say that they don't mind the word "Geed" and they are proud of it, but when it's used in a way to make them feel lesser it starts to be hurtful and quite annoying. We as a Greek community are meant to be accepting and respectful to others, that includes regular students on campus. There is no hierarchy when it comes to college. This isn't Social Stratification. Whoever started using this term as a way to put down people should really just be shunned from America. That's not how we do things here.
This may seem a little drastic or over-exaggerated, but to me personally, "Geed" is like using the word that some people call black people. You know exactly what I'm talking about. This needs to stop. There really is nothing more to say, except for stop. Stop using the word "Geed." It's stupid and rude and it's embarrassing to the Greek community. It's like being slapped in the face and being slapped in the face hurts. It hurts a lot. So don't use it!
Let's just stop using derogatory names all together. We're all equal human beings! Well, at least we should be. This may have all sounded like a rant, but it's a rant that needs to be said and read, so we can put an end to this word that has become so foul.
