In just a few days, one of Tampa's largest celebrations will take place as the pirates siege the city for the 2016 Gasparilla Pirate Fest. It's one of our historic city's most known tradition, and has been comparable to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and New Years Eve in New York City. Since the 1904, the city of Tampa has celebrate in this pirate-themed tradition. However, with our weather constantly in a temperamental mood and so many other uncontrollable factors, there are a few precautions and tips any attendee should follow:
1) Stay Hydrated!
Florida has a reputation of drastic changes in weather as of recent. As I write this article, the weather is perfectly chilly. However, I'm sure by Saturday it will be nice and sunny. With the sun, comes heat, and dehydration is soon to follow. You wouldn't want to miss out on all the pirate fun if you're walking the plank and passing out from dehydration!
2) Park Smart!
Driving around downtown the past couple of days, all people can see are advertisements for Gasparilla parking. Since I live so close to Bayshore Boulevard and don't have my car on campus yet, I'm going to walk to the event. It's the best decision to try and park at a friend or relative's house and walk if it's close enough. If not, look for the cheapest price in the next couple of days to reserve your spot.
3) Stay with Friends!
Thousands of people attend this event every year. The chances of you losing your friend group in the crazy crowds are very likely. Make sure you stick together and know where your friends are at all times. If you lose track of your group, make sure you keep your phone charged up so it doesn't die and you get stranded. You wouldn't want the pirates taking you hostage...
4) Drink Smart!
For all you 21 or older people out there, make sure you're watching who is handling the drinks you purchase. Never accept a drink from a stranger, and if you do, make sure you watch the bartender pour the drink. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
5) HAVE FUN!
This is one of the most fun events of the entire year, and it's a crucial aspect of Tampa's fame. Make the most of it and enjoy the pirate's siege on the city!
Although I've lived in Florida all my life, I have yet to attend a Gasparilla Parade. I'm excited to experience my first Pirate Fest and catch as many beads as I can!
