Navratri is a Hindu holiday that is celebrated in many different ways, but a huge part of the celebration is dancing. There are two main parts of the night: garba and raas. Both are high-energy dance forms. The way I like to describe them is as Indian line dancing. While it is a religious event, anyone can join in on the fun. The dances range from simple two-steps to much more complicated patterns. UIUC's very own ISA is hosting Garba 2018 at the ARC on November 9th, so feel free to stop by and dance a little. If nothing else, you can say you finally hit the gym this semester; you definitely won't leave without breaking a sweat!

1. Reppin' the culture

Bangles, bindis, and brown people galore, garba is the time of year when the whole community meets up to reminisce about the motherland. Don't get me wrong, I'm just as excited for pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween bangers as the next girl, but there's something magical about stepping out into the crisp midnight air after hours of dancing with your friends and family.

2. Insta-worthy outfits

That feeling when you get more than 5 likes on your Insta post... do I need to say more?

3. Making new friends

Like I said before, garba season is when all the brown people come out to play. I may not be BFFs with the people I met at garba, but I do have a few more Insta followers and Snapchat friends from it. On top of that, when you come back next year you already have a squad waiting for you.

4. Dancing the night away

Maybe its just me but I love dancing. School dances, sleepovers, school hallways, I'll be there, but nothing beats the feeling of watching a room full of people move in lines and circles with choreography of different difficulty levels and still be in perfect synchronization. And of course, there's always the one uncle do the snake dance so badly you get second-hand embarrassment. At garba, there is no such thing as good and bad dancing, just dancing until your heart is full and your soul feels light. Make sure to keep some ibuprofen on hand though because the morning after is going to be a painful one. But hey, no rainbows without rain, right?

This garba season, step out of your comfort zone. Go introduce yourself to a new group of people. Post a before and after of the night, so people can see how hard you went. And of course, take care of yourself. Stay hydrated and well-rested. Have a blast!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
