Game of Thrones Seasons 6 premieres soon and people have been talking about it since last year, when season five left so many cliffhangers. The problems at The Wall, the state of the Iron Throne and other major plot lines are sure to be addressed in this coming season. In this article, I’ll be talking about the central questions surrounding the next season of thrones. *Disclaimer: there may be spoilers in this article for those who haven’t seen all the episodes yet.
The State of the Iron Throne- The Lannisters and the Targaryens
The royal family in power currently is the Lannisters: Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion, and Tommen. Cersei is Robert Baratheon's widow and the power-hungry mother of King Tommen. Her twin brother is Jaime, who is also her incestuous lover and the father of her children. Tyrion is a dwarf, a drunk and a brilliant strategist. Tommen took over the throne after the Tyrell family poisoned his older brother, Joffery. The throne is in a state of disarray at the moment.
The primary contender to overtake the Lannisters is Daenerys Targaryen, the daughter of former king Aerys. She has a very strong claim to the throne, due to her regal bloodline mainly but also for her temperament, which is the right combination of just and strong. She also has three dragons, which is the Game of Thrones equivalent of the atom bomb. In all the seasons, she has been gathering an army on the Eastern continent of Essos in order to eventually attack the capital city of Westeros, King's Landing, and install herself as ruler. All the other true contenders for the throne, the Baratheons and the Starks, are dead, making so it seem inevitable that Daenerys will make her way to Westeros this season.
What’s happening at The Wall?
The return of the White Walkers after an 8000-year absence, who are a legendary race of mythical humanoid demons, are a much bigger threat than any human, but people in the south don't take them seriously. White Walkers are incredibly powerful, capable of reanimating dead bodies into beings called "wights" to do their bidding. They can only be killed with weapons made from certain materials. Jon Snow killed one with his sword made of Valyrian steel and Jon’s friend, Sam, killed one with a piece of Dragon Glass that he found unexpectedly in the mountains beyond The Wall. The undermanned and fractured Night's Watch is currently the only line of defense against White Walkers and the leader of the Night’s Watch, Jon, was stabbed multiple times at the end of season five in an act of mutiny.
The next season of Game of Thrones is sure to be filled with cliffhangers but is sure to answer many questions that were left open-ended last year with the end of season five. For now, we can only speculate at the future of Westeros due to all the different storms that are all seemingly going to converging at once.
