Dedicated fans nationwide crowded around whatever television they could find on Sunday, April 24. Hands were shaking and hearts were racing in anticipation for the season six premiere of the legendary HBO show “Game of Thrones,” aka GOT. GOT is based on a series of books written by George R.R. Martin, and up until now we always had the novels to predict what may happen. But now, we are in uncharted territory. Martin isn’t a fan of deadlines, so he’s taking an eon to write the newest GOT installment. That means that the show is now ahead of the books in time, and all fans have to go off of is theory.
This article will contain spoilers from the season six premiere, so here is your first warning. However, as discussion for the incoming premiere began to swirl, the one thing on everybody’s mind is: is Jon Snow really dead? That was a season five spoiler, so if you’re not caught up with that you have no business reading this article. Although the majority of people were mourning the loss of Snow, I had bigger concerns for the characters that I loved more. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about Jonny Boy, but I was far more concerned about Daenerys and her little run-in with a Dothraki horde at the conclusion of season five. Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy (or Reek or whatever) jumping off of a wall at Winterfell to escape the slimy Ramsay Bolton after Greyjoy stealthily tossed Bolton's ex off a balcony and her head exploded.
Poor little Marcela Lannister (literally the only nice one of Cersei’s children) is now way dead thanks to Oberyn Martel’s girlfriend who poisoned her. There are a million things for us as fans to worry about (I’m particularly worried about the fact that Gregor Clegane is basically Frankenstein.) But the season six premiere hit me like a bus with that last scene….
Spoilers from here on out.
So GOT opened with everybody’s favorite corpse freezing over in the snow at Castle Black. Davos Seaworth, the late Stannis Baratheon’s right-hand-man, and the only one with a damn conscience, drags Jon Snow indoors with a few of Jon’s faithful followers. That scenario remains inconclusive at the end of the episode.
Stark and Greyjoy get apprehended by Bolton soldiers (again), but have their asses saved by Brienne of Tarth. Brienne has been desperately trying to swear her sword to Stark, but Lady Stark just isn’t having it. Although she does now that she just literally saved her life for like the third time. There is little reason to be worried about Stark's immediate safety now that she’s in the care of Brienne, however, I’m sure Bolton would have no issue raping and killing Brienne should he get his hands on her.
Meanwhile, somewhere in proximity to Mereen, Daenerys has been taken hostage by a Dothraki horde, and was basically sold into slavery. That is until she surprises the Khal by speaking flawless Dothraki and introducing herself as the late Khal Drogo’s Khaleesi. She was then shocked to find out that there is a place where Khal widows go to “live out their days.” It is a huge mausoleum at Vaes Dothrak, so this is obviously a monkey wrench in Daenerys’ plan to get back to Mereen and continue on conquering her way to the Iron Throne of Westeros.
Arya Stark is still blind, but now she has resorted to begging on the streets. This is already a sad image until that little blonde girl (who has been mean from day one) from the House of Black and White shows up and starts beating the crap out of her with a staff. So, Stark is in rough shape right now. The Starks just cannot catch a break.
Last but not least, the audience was punched in the face by a revelation concerning Melisandre, The Red Woman, who conveniently arrived to Castle Black just prior to Snow’s barbaric murder (wink wink). When Melisandre takes off her gaudy blood-red amulet, her mega-hot body melts away to that of a 400-year-old woman. Like, what. Since that is the last scene of the episode, obviously no questions have been answered. If anything, more have popped up.
So there you have it, what is to happen to all our beloved characters? How in the hell are they going to pull off bringing Snow back to life? Because let’s face it, he isn’t really dead. Will Daenerys prevail over the people of her past? And lastly, what the hell is going on with the Red Woman? Although the second episode premiered yesterday, I have not yet had the chance to analyze it and panic over it. Feel free to keep your eyes peeled for more GOT related articles and always remember, Valar morghulis.
