Yeah, I said it.
Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, has proven himself to be a talented lyricist and a master at creating the perfect balance of pop and hip-hop. Heartbeat (2011), 3005(2013), and Sober(2014) are perfect examples of the catchy, sing-along Gambino-sound we have all come to know and love.
Fans and listeners have come to expect high-quality, unique songs from this artist; based off the two singles that have been released so far, I can tell we will not be disappointed with his newest project.
Gambino's upcoming album, Awaken My Love, is nothing like anything we have previously heard from this musician. The semi-pop, hard-hitting sound listeners are familiar with is replaced by classic, relaxed beats that sounds a bit 70s-esque. When I listen to Me and Your Mama, the first single that was released from AML, I feel like I am being transported back in time. "Let me into your heart," Gambino croons repeatedly; with lyrics as romantic as this, Me and Your Mama can only be described as an epic love song. The first time I listened to this track, I was literally left speechless because of just how good it is. The second single of the album, Redbone, has a mellow beat that you can't help but bob your head to. What this song lacks in intensity and build, it makes up for in grooviness and soul.
What makes these two songs so good to me is how raw they are. I can easily tell that Gambino poured his heart and soul into these tracks. I believe that is what sets him apart from other hip-hop artists. When all hip-hop artists are making music that sounds extremely similar, Gambino isn't afraid to switch it up, change his sound, and make something truly beautiful.
I'm excited for him to drop the rest of the album, and until then I'll be listening to the two singles on repeat.
