What to Do After Getting Involved On Campus?

In my last blog, I wrote about all the ways you could get involved on campus to jump start your career as an aspiring PR professional. While it is very important to get involved on campus, it is just as important to get involved off campus!

Get Involved Off!

Future employers want to see ways you can apply yourself outside the classroom and off campus. For students who can’t drive to internships or have access to get off campus to build experience, there are ways to get involved all from the comfort of your bed!

Look into These Platforms

ODYSSEY

One platform where you can get your name published and out to the world is Odyssey. Odyssey is an online platform that allows millennials to share their opinions, thoughts, and ideas to the world. They do so by submitting articles each week and they encourage writers to share their articles on multiple social media platforms.

Odyssey also offers incentives to their writers. In an interview with Kayla Alewel, Content Strategist and Branded Content Editor with Odyssey, also explained that they “have actually hired a couple of our Editors-in-Chief as full-time employees after graduation.”

Joining online platforms help to get your foot in the door.

Evan Burns, the CEO of Odyssey, says “the writers see an increased engagement for posts over self-published ones and often [gain] representational boost.” This is great when trying to build portfolios and gain experience in the field.

Getting your work and name on Odyssey and other platforms is an excellent and relatively easy way to get professionally branded!

HERCAMPUS

Another online platform you should consider joining is HerCampus. HerCampus features national style, beauty, health, love, life, career, entertainment, news, DIY, LGBTQ+, high school, and after college content supplemented by local content from 320+ campus chapters nationwide and in nine countries.

HerCampus submits content every other week and also allows you to write about almost anything but targets more of a specific audience-women!

AND MORE!

The Tab is also another online platform to consider when thinking about getting your name out to the world. The Tab was created at Cambridge University in 2009 and has been a place where the most talented young journalists report and write, professionally and independently.

Another option is to make your own blog and start your own postings. Gain followers and people who would be interested in your content. This could be fun ,but also give you pieces to incorporate into your future portfolio.

Just Get Your Name Out There!

By joining most of these online platforms, if the platforms have groups that are already on your campus, it is a great way to get involved and meet new people on your campus!

The articles you write will go a long way if you are interested or passionate about something, at least one other person in the world is, too, and they will want to hear what you have to say!

As Kayla said, “Showing a future employer that you worked in a team environment and hit deadlines are always great skills to have. Also, if you are able to show how you built an audience and drove traffic, that’s impressive to media outlets.”

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
