What I've Gained From Living In A Dorm

Around this time a year ago, I was packing and getting ready to move into a dorm room that I’d live in for the next year. I remember being so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect and I could only hope that it would be a pleasant experience. A year later, I can honestly say that it was and I’m looking forward to living in the same dorm again this year.

I had heard that one of the best places to meet people and make friends is on the floor of your dorm room. I completely agree. On freshman move-in day, the girl across the hall from my room stuck her head out the door to say hi and introduce herself. She was the first friend I made freshman year and a year later, we’re still friends. Dorm life allowed me to meet so many people with different majors and interests. Nearly all of the friends I made freshman year were people that lived on the same floor as me. There were so many late night talks exchanged, laughs shared and memories made that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t lived in a dorm.

Living in a dorm and also, sharing a room with someone is an experience that taught me a lot. I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I hate doing laundry. I learned how to deal with conflict. I learned that everything isn’t going to be perfect and that’s okay. It's something that allowed me to grow as a person while reminding me that it’s so important to be friendly, to say “hi” to people, and to do stuff outside of my comfort zone.

For me, living in a dorm was my first step to independence. I saw my brother move directly to an apartment for his freshmen year of college and that scared me. I didn't want to be completely on my own, but a dorm was the perfect transition. I was on my own, but I wasn’t alone. I was surrounded by people going through the same thing as me.

I may complain about the small room and sharing a bathroom with thirty other girls, but I know that I wouldn’t change it for anything. All of the memories made because of dorm life are well worth living in and sharing a 16’0’’ by 10’8’’ room.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
