I Was Furloughed For 5 Months, And That Time Allowed Me To Excel In My Studies

At the start of March 2020, I had no idea that my daily routine would be completely altered. I had no idea that this would last for five months.

Working retail for three years and going to school was so stressful, and time management was key in order to succeed in both my studies and work. When I was informed that I was going to be furloughed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I knew being bored at home would not be a problem for me.

I was able to achieve so much in my five months of being furloughed. I became a Certified Pharmacy Technician, got my Associate's in Applied Science focused on Pharmacy Technology, was accepted as a transfer student to the University of Texas at San Antonio and started a new career!

Now, would these accomplishments have happened without the pandemic and my furloughed status?

Yes.

But, the dedicated time I had to study for my PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) was greatly increased, and I was able to pass on the first time.

After passing my PTCE exam, everything else aligned, and my accomplishments all came rushing in. Most importantly, finding a job during this time was greatly appreciated. To have a hospital request me to work at their hospital was just one of the best pieces of news I received during my furlough.

I do not see my furlough as a bad event in my life. I see my furlough as the break I needed to focus on school and my accomplishments.

Returning to the work force was greatly anticipated, as I was used to having a busy schedule. I hope others were able to make the most of their furloughed status and focus on school... or whatever their focus may be.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
