"Full House" may have ended its eight-season run two years before I was born, but the series was a huge part of my childhood. I watched every episode countless amounts of times with my family. When I found out that Netflix was bringing back the show with Fuller House, I was so excited! Now the time has finally come, season one of Fuller House is on Netflix, here are my thoughts on the show. (Warning: there may be some spoilers.)
For those who don't know, the premise of this show is similar to that of the original series, but with DJ as the Danny Tanner of the family. DJ's husband died, and she is now a single mom with three sons. To keep with the mirroring of the original sitcom, Stephanie and Kimmy Gibbler end up moving in to help DJ with her kids.
Some are critical of this mirroring of the old series and the new series, but I love it. It is a pretty predictable show, but so was "Full House." Even though some of the storylines are repeated from "Full House," with DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy being the adults of the show there is a fresh and modern aspect to what took place in the '80s and '90s.
The first episode is by far the best episode of the season. For me, it was the perfect transition between "Full House" and "Fuller House." The whole cast, minus Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, came back for the pilot episode and the nostalgia was very real.
The 25-minute pilot episode overflows with references to "Full House." The house, and even the furniture are the same with some renovations. From famous catchlines such as, "How rude!" "Have mercy" and "Cut it out" to Jesse singing "Forever" to Becky, I have to say I got a little emotional. They even brought back Comet, well not the original Comet, but Comet Jr. Jr. who's owner is none other than, Steve, DJ's first love.
Being able to see more of the characters that I grew up watching is amazing. The characters are still true to their old selves, even after all of these years. Danny still loves cleaning, Jesse is still obsessed with Elvis, Steve still loves food, and Kimmy is still -- well, Kimmy.
They even threw some shade at the Olsen twins not being in the new series. When Stephanie asks her father where her younger sister is, he says, “Well, Michelle sends her love, but she’s busy in New York, running her fashion empire,” with the cast breaking the fourth wall and glaring into the camera.
Overall, I love "Fuller House." For some, it may be too much like "Full House" — cheesy and predictable. But that is what I love about the show. I love its cheesiness and I love how even though some story lines are similar to ones played out in "Full House," they have a modern twist on them.
For me, "Fuller House" has the most important thing that made "Full House" so special: love and family. The love that the characters have for each other is inspiring and is exactly why I fell in love with both "Full House" and "Fuller House."
I think that making "Fuller House" was very smart of Netflix and I hope that they bring it back for more seasons! Until then I will be re-watching these 13 episodes over and over again.
