From Water Street To Wabash

Why I came to Wabash as a resident of Crawfordsville.

When I got my acceptance letter from Wabash, I knew that I was going to a place that would feel like home. The irony of this is that I was going to school that is three blocks from where I spent my entire childhood on Water Street. In other words, I’m a townie. Many of you are probably thinking, “Why the hell did you not get away?” and I would tell you that that is a loaded question with a complicated answer. There were plenty of places where I could have gone, including Purdue, Indiana University, Butler, but I chose Wabash.

Growing up, I had many connections to the college. I graduated high school with Dr. Brown’s daughter, Dr. Warner’s daughter, Dr. Morillo and Miles-Morillo's son, and my grandmother used to work in Dean Rater’s office before she passed away. Needless to say, I had roots at Wabash. Many people would think that this is too close to home, but after visiting IU and feeling like just a number, I wasn’t going to go to a state school. Honor’s Scholar Weekend is what really did it for me. When I was able to visit all of the houses and see what each could provide for my Wabash experience, that’s when I knew that Wabash was home for me.

I accepted a bid to Phi Gamma Delta the summer before I came to Wabash. I was training to be on the cross country team and I had no idea that I would be super busy from day one of my Wabash career, but I have loved every moment of it. I have developed into a man through Wabash, developing my own kind of masculinity through the classes and interactions that I have been blessed enough to experience here at the school.

Wabash is a place where each man can develop himself as he wishes. We don’t choose our major until our sophomore year, which gives us a chance to explore our interests. With excellent academics and top-rated sports and theater facilities, Wabash was the place for me to examine and develop myself.

Coming from a small town and conservative background, I have changed into a person who sees himself as a citizen of the world and who is open to many more ideologies than when I first entered college. This college has improved me as a person and I think that any young man in Crawfordsville, or wherever else, should definitely give Wabash a look if they are thinking about school.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
