From Long To Short

The struggle of getting used to your new hair cut.

From Long To Short
Storm2K

If you have ever let your hair grow out past your shoulders to where it reaches or just touches the middle of your back only to chop it all off, then this article is for you. I have gone back and forth between growing my hair out and cutting it all off my entire life. Each time I get home from the salon with my new fresh haircut, regret sets in and I reach for my long ponytail that sadly is no longer there.

It all started about a week ago, I haven't cut my hair in a year and I needed a trim. I was debating how short I wanted it trimmed, so I turned to Pinterest. I saw all these shoulder-length cuts that I fell in love with. As we all know, Pinterest is a dangerous place to try and imitate; I thought this time would be the time it worked out.

So I did it. On that fateful day, I got my hair cut to shoulder-length. At first I was in love, sending snapchats of it to all my friends and admiring my hair. But then the regret started setting in, my head was suddenly a lot lighter and my hair was gone. That was when I thought, 'WHAT HAVE I DONE?'

Getting a haircut as short as I did takes some getting used to, not just for you but for your friends and family, also. So before you do what I did, think about a few of these things:

1. You won't be able to style your hair the way you used to

When I had long hair, I got to do anything with it, from braids to buns. When you have short hair, you're limited to what you can do with it. Depending on how short you go, you may not even be able to put it up.

2. Pinterest will be your best friend.

This is where you forgive yourself for turning to Pinterest for your haircut inspiration and you pray that you can pull off the styles you look into.

3. You're going to miss your old hair

Even to this day, I still look back at my old selfies with my long hair and remember all the good times I had with it. You will, too, but you will also find love for your short hair, and, hey, it can always grows back right?

4. Family and friends are going to miss your old hair too.

My grandma keeps telling me how she liked my long hair better. Others in your life will do that too and it will be annoying. But it is not their decision. It is your hair and your choice.

5. You're going to try to grow your hair as fast as you can.

After getting my hair cut, I've been looking for ways for it to grow long FAST. From biotin to hair masks, there are many possibilities. Then when you finally get that long hair you dream about for weeks, you will cut it again. It is a continuous process and like most of the things in life, you will have great moments and moments of regret.

So just remember these things before you make that drastic change. It's not like it'll last forever, though. Hair always grows back but it'll take time. Think long and hard before you go under the scissors.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
