Living With Girls

From a dad's point of view.

Living With Girls

Author's Note: All thoughts come from what I figure goes through my father's head while my sister and I invade his home.

Girls should be easier than boys. I mean, one son was enough. Girls should be lady-like and simple, not rambunctious and messy. Though it turns out I was wrong. Though I am lucky to have kids that do not fight all the time, it turns out having daughters that are too close can be just as bad.

There have been plenty of things I have had to get used to since living with my two daughters, most of which have come to my surprise.

The Mess

Boys are sloppy. But so are girls. Bobby pins, those things are everywhere. And hair ties. And hair. Hair is everywhere. I find enough hair in the bathroom drain, sink and on every floor than there is hair on their head. You know how many times I have unclogged the bathtub and pulled out what looks like a rat? Too many times. Also, the clothes. All the clothes. Why do girls have so many clothes? Always doing laundry, always clothes laying around everywhere. Yet they always want more. You know what else they need less of? Toiletries. I have one bottle of body wash and one bottle of shampoo, and I am good. Why does there need to be 11 other bottles of stuff in the bathroom just for two girls? They are clean, but they are unorganized. Other things there are an excessive amount of: water bottles, shoes, makeup, blankets and food.

Which brings me to my next point.

Food

I did not expect girls to eat that much. But yeah, they are my daughters so they have an appetite. They will say they are going on a diet, but then just sit down with a spoon and carton of ice cream. They use to be the little girls who couldn't finish their kid's meal when going out. Now it is a surprise if they don't get a second serving for any meal of the day. And an afternoon snack is a whole box of Wheat Thins or a few Hawaiian sandwiches. Oh, and Starbucks. Girls can never get enough. After everything they eat, I have no idea where they put it.

The Sister Love

You think two sisters close in age would be fighting all the time. There is slight bickering every now and then about who stole what clothes. But that is it. It is more common to see them cuddling than arguing over anything. I have never seen siblings so attached at the hip than these two. Should I be concerned? Maybe. It can be weird at times how close they are. But I would rather have that than girls screaming at each other...

Girls Who Act Like Boys

I did my best to raise ladies. I raised polite, respectable and smart girls. But lady-like is not a word to describe them. There are plenty of open comments about poop and sharting. I have never seen any two people laugh about bodily functions more than these two girls. It also amazes me how well they can burp. It can be a proud moment when they beat me with a disgusting burp or even worse, a fart. Just like boys, it is hard to take them out in public together. Their overwhelming sarcastic energy feeds off each other where ever we go. Age level — adult. Maturity level —12.

But no matter how obnoxious, cranky, spoiled, messy or hungry these girls are, they will always be my princesses.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
