You see each other and your squad everyday for five days a week.
You have for the last twelve years (or at least since middle school). You have bonded through late night studying, early morning cram sessions, blood, sweat, and tears. And then graduation comes along and now you no longer get to see them five days a week. This doesn’t really hit until August rolls around and you see everyone going back to school on social media.
Some friends decide to go to different colleges.
This makes sense because you may not have the same career path or financial support. Trying to get together with friends who go to college four hours away isn’t easy. Trust me. Some friends decided to go to the same college, and you may have the same gen ed classes, but soon you’re going to have to go down your own path. The everyday hug and gossip turns into every few days, which turns into maybe once a week, then once a month, and so on. With jobs, boyfriends/girlfriends, homework, life in general, it is hard to keep up with each other.
This is no one’s fault, so don’t blame yourself.
We’re all just busy living life. Luckily, we have those friendships where we can pick up wherever we left off and it’s like nothing happened. And as for others, you get the occasional “Hey. What’s up text?” text or the “We need to hang out soon!” text and catch up for awhile, and then back to silence.
Friendships after high school barely survive due to all of these obstacles.
The select few that do survive, those are your friends for life! Keep them close, and don’t forget to take a few seconds out of your day to say “Hey, I love you!”
