One part of growing up is that your friends are from all different parts of the state sometimes the nation. It's horrible to not know what to expect as your having different experiences and meeting different people. As phones and social media have made it easier to keep in touch the next best thing is coming back to visit them. If nothing else we are a lucky generation because we can keep in touch with friends from any corner of the globe.
Sometimes life is great. You see your best friends and nothing has changed. You can hug and smile and pick up on the last gossip conversation. Different majors and backgrounds make no difference in the friends you've grown to love and miss every day. They make you feel at home because when you have great friends, home isn't a place you walk into every night it is the people that make you feel safe and most like the real you.
When I transferred to a different college, I left my two best friends behind. We facetimed, snapped, and talked. We kept in touch. We held together because just like family you might not see them every day, but you know you still love each other. We planned trips to come see each other and learned how to make it work. Any relationship requires effort in order to last.
But also sometimes life is difficult. There are times when no matter what you do: you lose friends. You say things you don't mean. You grow up and go in different directions and you make other friends. You realize you've become different and that's not bad but it's time to let go. These are the friends that at one time you needed to help you grow and change into the better person you've become. You'll never forget the friends you had in high school, or at your first school or your first job. They just don't have a place in your life anymore. That's ok, You smile and wave goodbye, it is ok to let go.
Friends are one of those tricky subjects. You need them, you love them and you lose them at times. Those that are meant to stay with you, will. They'll guide you and love you through the good the bad and the ugly.
