To My Friends Now That I'm Taken

When your friends get into relationships, you begin to notice how the dynamic shifts. Suddenly, they're spending Friday nights with their new partner instead of with you. They are becoming a less frequent visitor in your home and things are just interesting.

I just got into a new relationship and I have some things I'd like to say to my best friends at this point.

To My Friends,

Hi guys. I know our relationship looks a little weird right now. Instead of weekend mini golf and movies, I'm out with my girlfriend eating donuts and sending you roughly 3.6 million snapchats of her being "so cute."

First and foremost, I just want to say thank you for not giving up on me. I know it's weird seeing my shift my attention from the group chat to my girlfriend, but I still love you. Thank you for wanting me to be happy. As you once said, "We're all going to find lovers someday, but that doesn't mean we're not going to be best friends." I truly want nothing more than that for us. I want to see you all find amazing people who will make you happy and love you in the way you deserve to be loved. I also want to be by your side for all the heart break that may come, and I can only hope you'd do the same.

If for some reason this relationship crumbles underneath my feet and she shatters my heart, I know you will be there to help me pick up the pieces and be whole again.

Secondly, I have a request for you. Do not let my girlfriend consume my entire life. All too often I have given up my hobbies to give myself free time for her and I don't want to do that again. Please tell me when I begin to stop loving myself for her, or if I begin to cut you guys off for her. I need you guys to help me maintain balance in my life and not become dependent on her.

You have seen me all too often become entirely dependent on a person for my happiness, and I refuse to do that again, but I need your help to see to it that does not happen.

Also I want you guys to know your worth in my life. I care so deeply for you all and I couldn't imagine not having you guys. I can't wait until I am settling down and we can all plan my wedding and you guys will be by my side through it all.

Please do not ever forget that I love you guys. Relationship or not, you will always be an important piece of who I am. I probably will never be able to say thank you enough for your friendship. I love you always.

-Your Best Friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
