I, like so many others, am a huge fan of the TV sitcom, "FRIENDS." If you are an avid watcher of the show, you have probably picked up a few life lessons from the gang. But even if you have never seen "FRIENDS," here is a compilation of some of my favorite lines that are seriously so applicable to life.
1.“I’M CURVY, AND I LIKE IT!!” –Joey (Season 10 Episode 5)
Yup, Joey got it right; ALWAYS love and accept your body! If you want to finish off that pizza, you do that! Appreciate everything about yourself and remember that being skinny is not the end-all be-all for life. It’s much more important to appreciate your “flaws” and not allow what you see as physical imperfections to derail you because NO ONE is or ever will be perfect.
2.“What’s more important? What people think or how you feel? You’ve gotta follow your heart.” –Joey (Season 6, Episode 18)
I mean yeah, right after his line Joey turned to Ross and made a hint about a girl with big boobs, but still, it's good advice. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that you have to be content with not having every single person on earth like you. It’s so much more important to be yourself and follow your passions rather than make yourself miserable in order to make others happy. Rachel was pushed by her parents to marry a man she didn’t love just for financial comfort, but had the strength to leave him and start all over on her own; she ended up becoming a strong, independent, successful woman who brought so much joy to others around her. This is your life, so live it!
3.“Go tell him he’s cute, what’s the worst that could happen?” -Rachel (Season 2 Episode 13)
Yeah, CONFIDENCE! WOOO! Let’s be honest, we all know going up to people we think are attractive can be intimidating, but hey, Rachel did it and she went out with Jean Claude Van Damme and met Drew Barrymore! Take risks, people!
4."Today it’s like there’s rock bottom, 50 feet of crap, then me.”-Rachel (Season 2 Episode 1)
Awwww Rachel. We all have, and will have, days like this; breakups, the passing of a loved one, sickness, etc. But J.K Rowling once said, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” So on those days when you have hit rock bottom, or are even below 50 feet of crap, remember that J.K Rowling ended up becoming the first billion dollar author in the world and only a few episodes later, Rachel was on cloud nine with Ross. So hold your head up because you never know what tomorrow will bring!
5."Welcome to the real world! It sucks! You're gonna love it!" -Monica (Season 1 Episode 1)
So true, Mon. Yea, there are some parts of being an adult that aren’t fun, like having to play Al Pachino’s butt double in a movie to pay bills, dealing with couches that don’t pivot correctly, and having to face the consequences of buying Mrs. Wiskerson the Cat aka the minion of the Anti-Christ. But being an adult, having independence, and having the opportunities to fulfill your life long dreams is pretty great. Eventually Joey became Dr. Drake Ramoray, Ross got his leather couch that he could successfully get up to his apartment, and Gunther bought Rachel’s cat that disturbingly resembled a defrosting chicken. So even when the rain starts to pour, remember that clouds always have silver linings.
6.“In your face, Last Year Me!”-Monica (Season 10 Episode 11)
A lot of times it’s easy to define competition as being between two people or two groups. But sometimes you learn the most by trying to grow and become the best person you can be not by trying to one-up someone, but instead to improve upon yourself by looking back on your past and challenging yourself to improve from the person you were.
7.“I’m hopeless and awkward and desperate for love!” –Chandler (Season 3 Episode 4)
We’ve all been there; dateless Valentine’s Days, third-wheeling with your best friend and her totally hot new boyfriend, watching "Romeo and Juliet" over and over again and sobbing over your fourth bowl of Ben & Jerry’s. But remember, Chandler had to deal with Janice, Kathy, Aurora, Julie Graff, and so many others until he found Monica. Monica, on the other hand, had to fall out of love with a James Bond look-alike and a gazillionaire who took her to Italy on their first date. Talk about tough love lives! So trust me, you’ll get through it! Plus, anyone who says being single isn’t great is lying, because being single is seriously awesome! Focus on loving and accepting yourself, and maybe figure out how to stop using humor as a defense mechanism 24/7, before you go looking for that special someone.
8.“It’s a Sunday. I don’t move on Sundays.”-Chandler (Season 2 Episode 7)
As I am writing this, it is a Sunday night and I pretty much haven’t moved from my bed all day (#thankgodfinalsareover). The point is, nowadays everything seems to speed by so quickly and with the overload of technology we have and the expectations from others that we work constantly, I definitely understand that concept of burnout, especially since I’ve dealt with perfectionism for my whole life. But don’t forget that rest is essential because you cannot do your best if you do not take time for yourself; God rested on the seventh day after creating the world, so I think you’re allowed to take some time chill out, too. So every once in a while go sit around in bed and watch "Die Hard" and order the Joey special (two pizzas).
9."Monica: Do you have a plan? Phoebe: I don’t even have a pla." (Season 1 Episode 4)
Feeling lost is tough and Phoebs has definitely felt it; her mom killing herself, having to live on the streets, marrying an ice dancer who turned out to be gay, having your best friend’s sexy Italian boyfriend make passes at you…ugh, life sucks sometimes. But sometimes it’s okay to not have a plan. Sometimes it’s okay to be in those grey areas and be confused about the direction you’re supposed to head in. The most important thing is that you follow your heart, respect yourself, respect others and chase your dreams fearlessly and soon you’ll find yourself marrying a sweet lawyer-turned piano player who accepts you for all your weirdness and baggage.
10.“Don’t hate, you don’t want to put that out in the universe.” –Phoebe (Season 1 Episode 1)
As quirky as Phoebe is, she’s right. Studies have actually shown that positivity is very powerful. There was a study done on flowers to determine the power positivity can have on life where a group of people were told to consistently go to one group of flowers and only say kind things such as, “you are so beautiful and so loved” then consistently go to another group of flowers and only say negative things such as, “you’re so ugly and everyone hates you”. They studied what happened with the flowers over time and the ones who only heard positive things grew to be beautiful and strong, whereas the flowers that only hear negative things were wilted and unhealthy! So spreading good, positive thoughts to others around you has been scientifically proven to have an enormous difference in the world, not only for others but also for yourself.
11. “That sandwich was the only good thing in my life!” –Ross (Season 5 Episode 9)
Poor guy, it was a hard year; getting divorced even faster than Kim K, getting evicted and eventually losing his job…that’s about as bad as it gets. And trust me, I understand the feeling of everything being so tough that something as simple as a meatball sub from my favorite deli can make my life bright. But isn’t that beautiful? That even the smallest, most ordinary things can make such an impact on our lives? So next time, be thankful for all the little things, like eating your favorite sandwich, and you could find your life really brightening up.
12. “I am going to be happy this year, I am going to make myself happy.” –Ross (Season 5, Episode 11)
I think one of the biggest problems people have, including myself, is expecting that external factors are the only keys to happiness; financial stability, having a great job, being in a good relationship with a boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. But life is never perfect. Sometimes you mess up, like having a Freudian slip and saying the wrong woman’s name during your marriage vows and taking your ex-girlfriend on your honeymoon instead of your wife. But happiness is not all about what is going on in your life but how you respond to your life. Know that no matter what situation you’re in, just doing things that you love and learning to be thankful can be totally life changing.
