Taking a winter class and bearing the cold from an empty apartment makes you really appreciate the time you have at home. Those few weeks after fall semester before the winter term flew by and it was difficult to see and do everything that your hometown has to offer, including spending time with old friends who now go to different schools. It’s always a great time to show your home friends your home away from home.
I was fortunate enough to have a friend from home come to visit twice this break and as her unofficial tour guide for UMD, there was a lot to get done during her quick visits. I felt the pressure of showing her just how great my school is, so we had a lot to get done.
Of course, I took her to her first Maryland basketball game. We sat in the student section while I tried to teach her all the cheers and traditions amidst all the excitement.
After the winning game we ventured to Route 1 and tried to decide amongst the plethora of pizza places where we should stop and eat.
When I showed her around campus she joked that our mall was about as big as her campus as a whole. This is of course when I channeled by inner tour guide and recalled that it is the largest collegiate mall in the country.
And you obviously want your friends form home to mingle with your friends at school. It’s always an intimidating moment when they meet for the first time and you know both groups so well you instantly know what their reactions are.
On a night out you have to show them all of your favorite spots and, more importantly, show them all of your favorite spots to eat at on the way home.
This was my friend’s first UMD experience and by the looks of it, it won’t be her last. Taking the time to show your home friends the campus and our traditions is exiting and reminds you of how great we have it here. Go terps!
