Dear best buddy,
In a week you're going to become my roommate. You're about to be the person sharing my room, watching Sunday Night Football with me and arguing about whose turn it is to wash the dishes. If you thought we were close already, you're about to know me even more. I'm excited to finish college with you and tackle life one day at a time, but I want to warn you: I am not perfect.
We have been friends for some time now, so you know that I can be terribly unorganized and messy. I don't always like to share my feelings and it takes five seconds for me to recover from an argument. I'm crazy, weird and dramatic. I will annoy you until you can't help but laugh. After long days, I like to lay on the kitchen floor and watch my hamster roll around in his ball. My singing is the worst and I apologize in advance for all the Drake impressions you will hear before 8a.m. I eat nonstop, so don't expect our food to stick around for long. But, you already know all this right? You've been my person for quite some time.
Rooming together isn't going to be easy. We will probably fight, freak out about creaky noises at 2a.m. and make our moms wonder where they went wrong in teaching us to keep our rooms clean and our hair brushed. There will be days when we will see each other just in passing because college is hectic and overwhelming. People tell me that living with your best friend can be incredibly challenging and impact your relationship, so I know that we are going to struggle at times.
But I'm not worried. You have been there for me no matter what, and even when I frustrate you to the extreme, you're still my person. You're the Meredith Grey to my Christina Yang (except for the cuddling, because you already know I'm not a fan). I am confident that college will be better because of you. Even though I'm the older one, I know that you will still encourage me to stay on track and make wise decisions. You care about me enough to make sure I'm not being lazy during the week and stupid on the weekends. You'll make sure I never go out with the wrong guy. I'm so grateful for those things -- you make me a better person.
As for me, I want to make a few "no promises" to you. That may sound strange and heartless at first, but just wait for it, because it's not what it seems.
I can't promise you I'm always going to be loving and kind, but I want you to know that no matter what, I will have your back, and you will have my friendship. I can't promise my breakfast dishes will be cleaned every morning, but know that I'm always willing to make you pancakes on that cool new frying pan we have. I can't promise I will always be strong in my faith and positively influence you, but understand that I am growing slowly and will imperfectly strive to encourage you.
It's about to be the start of a new adventure! Thank you to the moon and back for who you are to me. I couldn't have dreamed of a better scenario for college. And on a side note, I'm also really excited for the personal popcorn chef I'm about to gain; just not too much butter, okay?
You're my best friend, and I can't wait to be best roommates too. College, we're coming for ya.
Love,
Your soon-to-be roomie
